The Wedding He Turned Into a Funeral Chapter 05
The phone slipped from his fingers. His hand shook.
“What? How? This isn’t funny.”
The voice on the other end kept talking. “Our biggest investor just pulled out. What do we do?”
He finally looked at my dad–really looked. Realized who he was.
Vincent dropped to his knees in front of my father, slapping himself. “I was wrong. I messed up. Please don’t pull the funding. I’ll make it up to Jade- anything.”
My dad turned away. “You don’t apologize to me.
You hurt her.”
Vincent scrambled to me, still on his knees. “Jade
-I see it now. Give me one more chance. I’ll cut her
out completely, I swear.
I stayed quiet. He took that as hope,
“Please after all these years–don’t throw it away. I’ll treat you right.”
I finally asked, “If I weren’t your biggest investor’s daughter, would you be begging right now?”
His face went stiff. He forced a smile. “Of course, I
love you—not your money.”
His eyes gave him away.
I laughed. “Spare me. I actually thought you were
different. Now I see you’re just like every other trust–fund clown. I thought if I stayed, if I helped you build this company, that would count for something.”
“But at the altar I realized–to you I was just a freeloader. You forgot every late night, every strategy I gave you. All you saw was me sitting around. Get out. And don’t expect me to forgive you.”
He tried to argue, but the look on my dad’s face
made him think better of it. He finally got up to leave.
At the door, he turned and said, “Jade–I’ll prove it.”
