The Wedding He Turned Into a Funeral Chapter 04
Vincent wasn’t done. He used my mom’s
scrapbook to force me into playing caregiver for Melanie during her recovery.
I tried to refuse–he ripped the scrapbook apart right in front of me.
By the time I grabbed it, it was confetti. I held the pieces, choking on grief.
I had no choice. I said yes.
Melanie made me do everything. Help her to the
bathroom. Cook every meal and feed her by hand. If she was in a bad mood, she’d scream or hit me. I took it.
One week in, I was helping her out of the bathroom. I didn’t see the puddle on the floor. Slipped
-fell backward–took her down with me.
Vincent rushed to her side, lifted her carefully.
Didn’t even glance at me.
Pain shot through my lower back. Warm liquid trickled down my legs.
I reached for him. “Vincent–I’m pregnant- please, save our baby—”
He slapped my hand away. “Enough! You know she
lost hers—are you trying to rub it in?”
Melanie sobbed into her hands. “Jade, even if you hate me, don’t use my baby to hurt me.”
He carried Melanie out and left me there.
My vision blurred. I bit my tongue to stay conscious–and then nothing.
When I woke, I was in a hospital bed. My dad was there, eyes red.
He helped me sit up. “Why didn’t you tell me you were going through all this?”
I looked away.
He started peeling an apple.
Then the door slammed open. “Jade, stop faking.
Get back and finish Melanie’s recovery care.”
My dad hurled that apple at Vincent’s chest. “You animal. You don’t order my daughter around. And I already pulled every dollar from Harrington. You’ll be bankrupt by sundown.”
Vincent brushed the juice off his jacket, smirking. “Who’s this actor you hired? You think that threat scares me?”
His phone rang.
“Sir–the capital chain is broken. Harrington is going under.”
