The Wedding He Turned Into a Funeral Chapter 06
On the drive home from the hospital, Vincent’s head was spinning with everything Jade had said. He felt dazed—the good memories just kept flooding
back, one after another.
The moment he walked through the door, he saw that the place looked completely different.
It used to be bright and fresh, with plants on every windowsill. Jade had kept it alive. Now it was
pink overload. Frilly dolls on the sills instead of greenery. The whole place felt off.
Melanie came out in a pink apron, holding a bowl
of mushroom chicken soup. “Vincent, can you set this on the table?”
He took it. The heat seared his fingers–blisters
already forming. He dropped it. Soup splattered everywhere.
Seeing that, Melanie dropped the act and started picking on him. “Vincent, you can’t even handle one simple thing right? What am I supposed to say to that?”
He held up his burned hand, “You didn’t warn me
it was that hot. And no mitts? You don’t even care.”
She shrugged. “That’s on you. Basic common sense–soup’s hot when it comes off the stove.”
Then he remembered Jade bringing him soup. The bowl was always the perfect temperature–warm
enough to drink. If it was too hot, she’d hand him oven mitts and remind him to watch his step.
Not every soup came ready. Jade had done that for him.
It all clicked: Jade had been doing that for him the whole time. She’d quietly taken care of everything behind the scenes, always making sure he could just walk in the door and relax.
And what had he thought? That she was being lazy. That she didn’t want him to have a moment’s peace.
Melanie saw him standing there like an idiot, grabbed his hand, and dragged him to the sink to run cold water over it.
Vincent let her, still caught off guard. As the water cooled his fingers, his head started to clear–and a question suddenly hit him.
He asked, point–blank: “Melanie–did Jade actually send those girls after you?”
