He Heard Every Thought I Had About His Body Chapter 06
By the end of the reunion, plenty of people were already drunk.
One of the classmates I was close with leaned over.
“Cora, you’ve got yourself a great husband.
Handsome, classy… total package.”
Warren smiled politely. “You’re too kind.”
Someone else chimed in.
“Cole’s not bad either. Cora, you’re seriously spoiled.
Guys like that all around you.”
“Cora’s smart, she’s got a great career. She deserves a hot guy,” another classmate teased, nudging me.
“Come on, Cora. Who’s better–looking? Your husband or Cole?”
Seriously? This is the ‘who do you love more, Mom or
Dad‘ question all over again.
How am I supposed to answer that?
Too bad, they were too drunk to let it go. The other
guy stared at me expectantly too.
Neither of them looked like they were leaving without an answer.
“They’re both handsome.”
I tossed it out just to get them off my back. That
seemed to satisfy them.
I let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Then I went back to nibbling on my crackers,
completely oblivious to the fact that the person beside
me had disappeared.
Tara was the first to realize.
“Where’s Warren?”
“Huh? No idea.”
She gave me a look.
“Your husband disappears and you don’t even notice?”
She scanned the room, then pointed toward a corner.
“Uh–oh. Looks like someone’s sulking.”
She’d witnessed the whole thing.
I frowned. “What’s he mad about?”
“Go ask him yourself.”
What a hassle.
With a silent sigh, I walked over,
Warren was sitting alone in the corner with a drink in his hand.
His face was as calm as ever. Nothing about him suggested he was upset.
Still, remembering what Tara had said, I asked, “Are you mad?”
“No.” His answer came immediately.
“Then why are you sitting over here?”
“The smell’s better.”
I glanced at the crowd of loud, drunken classmates.
The whole room reeks of alcohol. Does he actually like that smell?
Can’t relate, but it’s okay. I’m such a supportive wife.
After thoroughly complimenting myself in my head, I simply said, “Okay,” and turned to leave.
Before I could take a step, he caught the corner of my shirt.
His voice was low, quiet–almost wounded.
“You said Cole was handsome.”
“I was just saying it to be polite.” I said.
“Really?”
Of course. I was just brushing them off.
To be fair, Warren was better–looking.
The corners of Warren’s lips lifted before he could stop them.
Though Cole isn’t far behind. Otherwise I never would’ve dated him.
Sure, Warren’s handsome.
But when you see someone every single day, you kind of stop noticing.
I nodded seriously. “Really.”
I thought that would’ve settled it.
Instead, Warren somehow looked even more upset.
For someone so normally stoic and unreadable, I’d
never seen so many emotions flash across his face in such a short time.
Did I say something wrong? Obviously not.
He’s just too picky.
Warren let out a short laugh that sounded more
defeated than amused.
He gently pulled me onto the couch.
Then, instead of sitting beside me, he lowered himself
onto one knee in front of me.
Looking up into my eyes, he asked quietly, “Between
me and Cole, who do you like more?”
Only then did I notice he’d undone a few buttons on his shirt.
Below his collarbone, the firm outline of his chest was
faintly visible, rising and falling with every slow breath.
I just said, “You’re my husband.
“I want to hear you say it.”
That was harder than it should’ve been.
I’d never been good at showing my feelings. Especially not with words.
When I hesitated, Warren undid another button.
He leaned in slightly. The neckline slipped open even farther.
Holy crap. So hot!
From where I sat, his body was impossible to ignore.
Cool, pale skin. A lean, taut waist.
I could even catch a glimpse of black–his boxer briefs,
the same kind I’d seen folded in his closet.
The room was dim, and the conversations around us faded into the background.
Warren, who was always calm and reserved, was down on one knee in front of me.
The secretive intimacy of it made my heart skip.
“Cora.” He asked again, his deep voice rough and deliberate.
“Between me and him… who do you like?”
It felt as if I’d been hypnotized.
I said, “You.”
“Is there only me in your heart?”
“Mhm. Only you.
