They faked Her Death For Months, When I Truly Died, They Went Mad Chapter 04

The sharp smell of disinfectant hit my nose.

A monitor beeped in steady rhythm.

I opened my eyes with a jolt. White ceiling, white sheets, and

beyond the window, snow that never melted.

This wasn’t the riverbed.

It was the Frostmere Pack Healing Center.

My arm and ribs were wrapped in bandages, and every

movement sent pain through me. But the air held two scents.

that steadied me completely my adoptive parents‘.

I didn’t bother with shoes. I stumbled to the intensive care unit.

Two people lay behind the glass.

Dad. Mom.

They were exactly as I’d left them when I went south: their

wolves trapped in a sleep that wouldn’t break, their bodies

kept alive by machines.

Five years ago, a delivery truck ran a red light. At the last

second, Dad turned the wheel toward himself, and Mom

shielded me in the back seat.

I came out without a scratch. They’d been unconscious ever since.

For the first three months, I stayed by their side every day.

Every healer said their wolves had gone quiet, and whether they ever woke was up to the Moon Goddess.

So I went south, searching for the witch who was said to wake, sleeping wolves.

She said she would guide me through the pain, and once my wolf truly changed, she’d keep her promise.

That was why I’d stayed in Greyhaven for five years, believing

that Oren, the others, and the Ashborne family were the home she’d found for me.

But that road was never home.

It had only led me back here.

Witch.” I called her through the mind link. “I’m back. Now tell me how to save them.”

The silence stretched on.

So long that I wondered whether the link had broken across the north–south distance,

Then that familiar voice finally pressed close to my mind.

“When the potion cut your old bonds, it released the power your wolf had been holding back. It will only last forty–eight hours.”

“Take one hand at a time and let your wolf mend the other’s wolf through touch. Until the awakening is complete, don’t let go, and don’t let grief take your consciousness.”

“Why does my wolf have this power?”

The witch laughed softly.

“That’s a question for later.”

The mind link fell silent.

She didn’t explain where the power came from, or why I had

to lose everything in the south first.

I could only seize this one chance.

I found the doctor on duty, Vale, and asked to enter the intensive care unit.

After reading the charts, he allowed me to sit with my father only until dawn.

In my isolation gown, I sat beside Dad’s bed, pulled off my

right glove, and took his cool hand.

My wolf stood up from the depths of my mind.

A stream of silver warmth flowed through my palm and

slowly into his sleeping wolf–veins.

The witch murmured in the mind link:

‘It’s started. Don’t let him hear your despair.”
