The Nobody He Killed was Royalty Chapter 06
Freya’s POVÂ
When I hear the news, I just keep flipping throughÂ
the documents in my hand, my face blank.Â
The serpent clan is sending people everywhere to find me, even offering bounties to neighboring clans.Â
So what?Â
The serpent clan won’t last long without my father’s protection anyway. Even if Adrian actually makes it here, he’d never break through all our defenses. Our warriors would turn him away.Â
So I don’t worry about it.Â
– After that, I focus on learning how to run the clan.Â
Father teaches me how to handle trade disputes between different clans, how to secure the best terms in negotiations, how to judge whether an ally is worth trusting.Â
After training each day, I go to the healing chamber to see my son.Â
He’s still weak, lying in specially prepared healing fluid, his tiny body floating in the warm liquid. The healer says in a little while, he’ll be fully recovered.Â
Every time I look at him, my heart clenches.Â
This child almost didn’t make it.Â
All because of that man.Â
Two months pass.Â
I can now handle some of the clan’s affairs on my own, and I’ve even closed a few good deals for the clan. Father is pleased with my progress.Â
On the training grounds, I can hold my own againstÂ
some of the warriors now. I’m not as good as the experienced veterans yet, but at least I’m not completely defenseless like before.Â
Things are looking up.Â
It’s one of the clan’s holidays.Â
I give everyone in the estate time off. Most of the servants go home, leaving only the old steward, a few cooks, and the guards on duty.Â
Father is still out handling business, says he’ll be back soon,Â
I help the cooks prepare a feast, then carry the dishes. to the dining table. The smell of roasted meat fills the hall.Â
Just as I’m about to sit down and wait for father to return, the old steward hurries over.Â
“Miss Freya, there’s a serpent at the estate gates.” His voice sounds tense.Â
I realize Adrian has found his way here. I frown, about to tell him to send Adrian away.Â
Heavy footsteps suddenly echo down the hallway.Â
A figure stumbles through.Â
It’s Adrian.Â
barely recognize him.Â
His face is covered in stubble, eyes bloodshot, clothes and skin smeared with mud and melted snow. His clothes are torn everywhere, covered in wounds.Â
The moment he sees me, his eyes light up.Â
“Freya, I knew you weren’t dead!”Â
He limps toward me, reaching for my wrist.Â
I step back immediately.Â
His hand stops in midair.Â
Seeing my indifferent expression, he pulls his hand back, talks to me like I’m a child. “Still mad? Okay, I know you’re hurt. But you’ve got to let it go at some point, right? Faking your death like that really scared me. But that’s enough now. Come on, let’s go home.”Â
I stand there. Say nothing.Â
He starts getting impatient. “Come on, Freya. I know what you want. Status, money, right? Fine. You can have all of it. I’ll even make Seraphina leave our house, okay?”Â
A cold laugh escapes me. “Home? This is my home. I don’t have any other home.”Â
Adrian freezes for a second, then laughs.Â
He looks around the luxurious hall, mockery in his eyes.Â
“Right. Everyone knows you’re just some random rogue beastman. A place like this is yours? You’re just working here, aren’t you? What, you’re happy being a dishwasher? A maid?”Â
He steps closer, voice hardening. “I already told you to come back to the serpent clan with me. You’ll beÂ
the chief’s wife, you’ll have everything. These beastmen are too rough, too violent. You have any idea what I went through to sneak in here? You really think you can last here? You won’t.”Â
“Come home with me. Without me, you’re nothing. I‘ ve already offered you so much. Don’t push it.”Â
I can’t help but laugh out loud.Â
Don’t push it?Â
Two months ago I was begging him. Now he stands in front of me handing out scraps like charity.Â
And where does he get the nerve to say any of this?Â
Still thinking he’s some great serpent chief. He has no idea his clan is falling apart, that neighboring clans are already discussing how to carve it up.Â
I speak, keeping my voice calm. “Your chief’s wife position? I don’t want it. You should save it for Seraphina. After all, you love her so much. Whatever she says, you believe. She says I threatened her, you lock me up. She says I want to hurt her baby, you have people watch me.”Â
Adrian frowns. “She was pregnant, her emotions were unstable-”Â
I cut him off. “I was pregnant too. You saw all that blood, didn’t you? That was because of you. Because ofÂ
Seraphina’s lies. Me, Kael, the pharmacist, we were all begging you. But you still didn’t believe us.”Â
He opens his mouth to argue, but nothing comes out.Â
I keep going. “That was my child. Nine months I carried him, waited for him. You thought I wasÂ
vicious? Thought I’d hurt someone for status? I neverÂ
wanted any of that. But you didn’t believe me. You locked me in that castle. Do you have any idea what those guards did? What your mother did?”Â
“The guards beat me. Your mother whipped me with a serpent–scale lash, then kicked me in the stomach.”Â
Adrian’s face goes white instantly.Â
His legs give out. He drops to his knees.Â
“I… I didn’t know.”Â
A bitter laugh escapes me. “Of course you didn’t know.Â
If you did, you wouldn’t have the nerve to show up here.”Â
He looks up, his voice shaking. “Then… the baby?”Â
