My “Escort” Boss Chapter 06
He’s a Two- Faced Scumbag
Just then, footsteps sounded outside the bathroom.
“Nora? I heard you screaming. What happened?”
It was Theresa–the woman who would love nothing more than to catch me making a mistake and kick me qut of the department.
“Don’t make a sound!” I panicked. Without thinking, I shoved Darren into the nearest shower stall and squeezed in after him, yanking the curtain shut.
The space was far too small.
Darren’s back pressed against the wet partition. To avoid touching me, he braced his hands against the wall, suspending himself between us. My face was right in front of his bare chest, close enough to feel the heat radiating from his tense muscles.
The footsteps drew closer. Theresa seemed to be lingering outside.
“That’s strange… no one’s here?”
I held my breath, my heart pounding wildly.
Suddenly, another set of hurried footsteps rushed in, accompanied by the sound of a gun being drawn. It was my partner, Sarah. She must have heard my scream and thought I was being attacked.
“Nora!” Sarah shouted. She spotted a pair of large male feet visible beneath the stall door.
“Don’t move! Hands on your head!” She charged over, convinced I was being held hostage.
shrrk-
The curtain was yanked open.
Time froze.
Sarah stood there with her gun raised, her mouth forming a perfect “O.” In front of her, the usually cold
and untouchable Chief Gellar was bare–chested, braced against the wall, while I was flushed red and trapped beneath him. From this angle, it looked unmistakably like something scandalous was happening.
“I–I’m sorry!” Sarah nearly dropped her gun, her face turning tomato–red. “I thought Nora was in danger! You… you carry on! I didn’t see anything!”
She snapped the curtain shut and fled in complete panic.
A deathly silence fell over the stall.
Darren slowly lowered himself, letting out a helpless sigh.
“It’s over,” I said despairingly, covering my face. “By tomorrow, the entire department will know I slept‘ with the chief. And Sarah has the biggest mouth…”
I thought of Mary, and my chest tightened painfully, “If this gets back to your girlfriend…”
“I don’t have a girlfriend,” Darren interrupted suddenly. His gaze was so serious it made my heart stutter. “The gift last time was just for a normal friend. Actually, I-”
What was he trying to say?
I looked up at him, surprised, with an inexplicable flicker of expectation. His eyes were so focused, as if at this moment, I was the only thing in his world.
Ring–ring–ring.
The sharp sound of a phone shattered the fragile atmosphere.
Darren frowned and glanced at the screen, intending to hang up. But the phone kept ringing insistently. He had no choice but to answer.
In the quiet bathroom, I heard the voice coming clearly from the receiver. A voice I knew all too well, soft and tearful.
“Darren… when are you coming home?”
It was Mary.
“It’s so dark at home… I’m scared. Please come back soon.
It felt like a bucket of ice water was dumped over my head.
One second he said he didn’t have a girlfriend. The next, that “normal friend” was urging him to come home in the middle of the night.
I watched Darren hang up, a trace of conflict on his face.
“What?” I let out a cold laugh and stepped back, deliberately putting distance between us. My voice
turned icy, like I was talking to a stranger.
“Since someone’s waiting for you at home, Sheriff, you’d better hurry back. Don’t keep her waiting.”
Darren opened his mouth, trying to explain, but I had already turned and pushed the door open, walking away without looking back.
My heart felt like it was being clenched in a fist.
Nora, what were you even hoping for?
He’s nothing but a two–faced scumbag. Keeping Mary in a luxury home while flirting with you at the precinct.
And at that very moment, Mary was wearing a sexy red nightgown, setting the stage for a “point–of–no- return” trap, waiting for Darren to walk right into it.
