My Billionaire Husband Lost His Perfect Wife Overnight Chapter 06

The floor shifted under him.

“What… did you just say?”

He made it to the funeral home on legs that didn’t feel like his.

Two urns sat on the director’s desk.

[Evelyn Mercer. Walter Mercer.]

“This can’t be real…”

The attendant beside him exhaled.

The gentleman took his own life. His wife went into cardiac

arrest. They couldn’t save her.”

Everett stumbled back.

They were the only family Tessa had.

Two people were dead.

Over a suit he’d ordered ripped off an old man’s body.

His eyes burned. He dialed Tessa,

A recorded voice answered.

[The number you have dialed is no longer in service.]

It finally hit him.

Tessa was gone.

“Why…”

He carried the two urns home. His body moved, but nothing inside him did.

The empty room stared back at him, and something in his chest caved.

The nursery had been ready for weeks. They’d been counting down the days.

Where had she gone?

He drifted into the nursery.

It was bare.

Everything had been stripped out: the crib, the mobile, and the blankets.

Who did this?”

The housekeepers rushed in, every one of them staring at the floor.

The room was ready. She’s about to give birth. Who told you to take it apart?”

The head housekeeper stepped forward.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Ms. Ashford… she lost the baby.”

“What?” The word came out like he’d been punched.

“She was fine. How did she miscarry? Why the hell didn’t anyone call me?”

The housekeeper’s voice shook.

“She miscarried from the shock… after she found out about her grandparents.”

“We tried to reach you after, but Ms. Ashford told us… not to

bother. She said it wasn’t necessary.”

Wasn’t necessary?” His voice broke. “That was my daughter!”

The truth snapped into place.

Vanessa’s story about the vacation was a lie. Every word of it.

“Why did she lie to me?”

His mother appeared in the doorway, cane in hand.

The baby’s gone? So be it. She wasn’t an heir anyway.”

“When Tessa gets back, I’ll have a talk with her about

whether she still wants to be an Ashford.”

Everett turned to face her.

“Mother, is this really the time?”

“She won’t pick up. She won’t answer my texts. I’m actually. worried.”

His mother’s face hardened.

“Worried about what? You think she won’t come crawling back?”

“She married into this family for the status and the money.

She doesn’t have the nerve to walk away from that.”

She turned and went to bed.

Everett couldn’t sit down. Something heavy and shapeless sat

in his chest, pressing against his lungs.

In one night, he’d lost the baby they’d spent months dreaming about.

He noticed a tiny pink onesie left behind on the bare floor.

His chest seized.

“My little girl…”

If it had been up to him, just him, without the family

breathing down his neck, he wouldn’t have cared if it was a boy or a girl.

He and Tessa had promised each other.

They’d love this baby no matter what.

A girl who looked like Tessa would’ve been perfect.

Now there was nothing.

He called his executive assistant.

Every word came out measured, deliberate,

“Find Tessa. Dig up the whole city if you have to. Bring her home.”
