Savannah immediately pulled back. “What are you doing?”
Ethan frowned at her. “Making a statement. We clear this up.
We say you and I are just friends. Maybe if we clear it up.
Hazel will forgive me.”
Savannah pressed her lips together, her voice shaking.
“There’s no clearing this up. Ethan, do you still not understand why she left?”
Ethan looked at those photos and the online commentary.
For the first time, he felt the full weight of how wrong he’d been.
That’s exactly why I have to set this straight. I need Hazel
and everyone else to know that the only person I love is her.”
Savannah’s face went white as she stared at him. Her voice was hoarse. “What about me?”
Ethan looked at her, genuinely confused, “You’re our friend.”
He paused. “Actually, Hazel doesn’t like how close we are.
Savannah, from now on, we need to keep our distance. I can’t make Hazel uncomfortable anymore.”
In that moment, Savannah looked like she’d been struck by lightning. Her eyes went wide with disbelief.
She had done so much. She’d even thrown away her most
precious friendship for him. And to him, she was still nothing.
She let out a bitter laugh. “Wake up, Ethan. I’ve known Hazel a lot longer than you have. When she’s done, she’s done. She doesn’t look back.”
“You’re lying!” Ethan cut her off harshly. “What Hazel and I have isn’t that fragile. Once I see her–once I actually get to explain–she’ll forgive me.”
Over the next week, Ethan went to my office. The front desk told him I’d taken vacation leave.
He didn’t believe it at first and camped outside the building for a full day and night.
Once he was sure I wasn’t there, he went to my parents‘
house. But every time my dad saw him, he let the dog out to chase him.
The warm welcome he used to get was gone. No matter how
he knelt at the door and begged, they refused to tell him where I was.
Two weeks later, I came back from my trip. Before I even reached the door, I spotted Ethan pacing out front.
In just a couple of weeks, he’d lost a lot of weight. He hadn’t shaved. He looked wrecked and exhausted.
“Hazel?” When he saw me, he froze for a few seconds, unsure.
Then his face broke open and he ran toward me with his arms out.
He tried to hug me like he always did. But the second he got
close. I stepped back. His arms hung in the air. The silence stretched for a few seconds.
“Hazel. I’ve been waiting for you to come home.”
I lowered my eyes, not wanting to look at him, and pulled my suitcase past him.
Ethan grabbed my arm, unwilling to let go. “Hazel, I know you’re mad about me being too close to Savannah. But there’s nothing between us! Please stop being mad at me over this little stuff. Okay?”
I let out a dry laugh and looked at him without expression. Ethan, we broke up. No matter what you do, we’re never going back to what we had.”
His face went slack. I ignored it and kept going. “I could deal with you inviting Savannah on every single date.”
*But you let her sleep in our marriage bed. You let her replace everything I put in our house. You let her wear a wedding gown to our ceremony. You think that’s just little stuff?”
With every question, Ethan’s grip on my arm went stiffer. He tried to defend himself, but his guilt was so strong he couldn’t even meet my eyes.
I yanked my arm free. “Ethan, stop looking for me. I don’t want to see you again.”
I grabbed my suitcase and walked inside. He moved to follow.
but stopped dead at the sight of the dog in the yard, glaring at him.
