I Sat Trapped In The Wedding Car For One Whole Hour Chapter 03
The smile vanished from Ethan’s face. Like he’d just
remembered I existed, he looked over at Savannah. It took him a few seconds to speak.
“Then let’s head to the chapel.”
walked to the car and opened the back door. Savannah shoved her way in before me.
The massive layers of her gown instantly swallowed
two–thirds of the seat. “My dress is way bigger than yours. I can’t sit in the front.”
I looked at Ethan, who was already getting in from the other
side. He just nodded. “We’re running late. Don’t make a big deal out of this.”
I didn’t say a word. I turned and got into the passenger seat.
It didn’t matter anymore. Once we reached the chapel, I’d
leave. Whoever he wanted standing next to him at the altar was none of my business.
The whole drive, Savannah was buzzing with excitement in
the back. She had the driver stop so the makeup artist could
do a touch–up. Then she was thirsty and needed a latte. Then
she had to get out and buy a matching pair of high heels.
Ethan went along with every single demand.
I watched through the window as he knelt on one knee inside
the store, holding Savannah’s ankle, carefully slipping the
heel onto her foot. He looked like a man at prayer.
I pulled out my phone, zoomed in, and recorded the whole
scene. I saved it along with our wedding Invitation and
engagement portraits, then scheduled a post to go live in one hour.
When she came back, Savannah casually handed me her flats.
“Hazel, your heels always make your feet bleed. You should wear these. They’re way more comfortable.”
looked down at the glittering heels on her own feet and didn’t take them.
Ethan huffed impatiently, grabbed the flats, and tossed them onto my lap.
Savannah’s just trying to be nice. Does your face have to look
like that all day? It’s supposed to be a happy day, and
everyone has to walk on eggshells around you. You realize you’re exhausting us all, right?”
I stared at the dark shoe print smeared across my dress and
‘forced myself to stay composed. “Fine.”
My compliance seemed to calm Ethan down instantly. The
laughter and playful noises from the backseat started right back up.
I looked out the window and was about to text my parents
that we were one block away when the driver slammed on
the brakes. A second later, we were jolted by a sharp, multi–car crash from behind.
A swarm of people got out of their cars. “Looks like an accident up ahead. This road’s blocked.” “We can just walk. It’s right around the corner.”
Only Savannah pouted, looking completely put out. “I knew I shouldn’t have bought such high heels. Walking to the chapel is going to destroy my feet.”
picked up her flats and tossed them on the ground. “Then take those off and put these back on.”
Savannah’s face stiffened. She bit her lip and refused.
Ethan sighed, swept her up into his arms, and kicked the flats back toward me.
You know Savannah hates walking. I’ll get her to the chapel. Put on your shoes and catch up.”
As they brushed past me, I heard Savannah’s shaky voice.
You should put me down. Hazel’s going to get jealous and take this the wrong way.”
Ethan’s arms tightened around her. His voice dropped so low that only I could hear it,
Just this once. It’s all we get. Let me have this. Ten more minutes. Okay?”
I thought back to his proposal. Ethan had knelt in front of
me with the ring and said, “Hazel, I promise I’ll make you the happiest bride in the world.7
But the future he imagined didn’t seem to include me anymore.
