He Gave Me Brother’s Life To Her Dog Chapter 02

He Gave Me Brother’s Life To Her Dog Chapter 02

I went home alone.

When they heard the door open, Mom and Dad stood up at, the same time.

Mom looked behind me first. “Where’s Derek?”

Her voice trembled. “Did something go wrong with the

System? Why didn’t Grant come back with you?”

opened my mouth, but no sound came out.

Back then, the System had pulled Derek and me into a mission world.

The System told us that if we completed all the tasks, we could return to our world.

And we would receive one final reward–the ability to resurrect any deceased life.

No matter how long they’d been gone or what had happened

to their body, the world would rewrite their identity and history so their return made sense.

Derek had said, “Maren, we’ll finish the tasks together and bring Grant home.”

I held on to those words for seven long years in that world.

When the tasks were done, only ten months had passed in reality.

Grant had already been buried. Mom’s hair turned white

overnight. Dad never went into Grant’s room again.

After I woke up, I told them Grant still had a chance to come back.

At first they didn’t dare believe it. Then Derek promised

them in person, “The System won’t lie to us.”

“Wait thirty more days. I’ll bring Grant back.”

Dad held his hand with red–rimmed eyes.

Derek, you and Maren are only here because Grant gave his life.”

As long as you two are safe, we don’t dare ask for anything more.”

Derek shook his head. “Mr. Sterling, my parents died when I

was a kid. Grant put me through school. He’s my brother too.

I’m not walking away from him.”

He sounded so sincere. So no one expected that in the end, he

would be the one to abandon Grant.

Mom looked at my face as if she suddenly understood.

She eased herself down at the table. “The reward… it’s been used?”

nodded. “Who did he save?”

Mom asked, “Derek’s father or mother? He grew up without

parents. It would be good for him to have someone.”

I closed my eyes. “Neither. He saved Lauren Vance’s dog.”

The room went terrifyingly quiet.

Dad stood there, motionless for a long time.

Mom lowered her head at the dinner she’d made. Tears fell one by one.

She didn’t make a sound. She just picked up the bowl set in front of Grant’s place.

As she reached the kitchen doorway, her hand trembled.

The bowl shattered on the floor.

Mom!”

I rushed toward her. But she crouched down and picked up

the broken pieces one by one,

“This morning when I was cutting the ribs, I wondered if

Grant would think I’ve gotten old.”

“He’s always been picky. He wouldn’t eat it if it was even a little too salty.”

I thought, he’ll have to eat it no matter how salty. He hasn’t been home in a year…
