He Gave Me Brother’s Life To Her Dog Chapter 01
My brother Grant Sterling. Derek Hayes, and I were in a horrific car accident.
Grant shoved us out, but he was burned alive inside the car.
While we were unconscious and critically injured, The System
pulled Derek and me into a task world.
The System told us that if we completed every task, we could
return to reality and receive one chance to bring back any life that had been lost.
We promised each other we’d use it to bring Grant back.
After we got back, with only ten minutes left before the chance expired, Derek disappeared.
I tracked his location to the VCA Animal Hospital and found him holding a golden retriever.
It was Luna–Lauren Vance’s dead dog.
When he saw me, all he said was, “Luna is Lauren’s only reason to keep going.”
Your brother has been gone a year. Your parents have accepted it. Don’t waste the chance.”
For seven years in that task world, I kept going on the belief that I could bring Grant back.
Now he had used my brother’s only chance at resurrection to make another woman happy.
I walked up to him and slapped him hard across the face.
His house, his car, his position, his future–Grant and my family had given him all of it.
In that case, I would take back everything my family had given him, piece by piece.
The System’s cold voice echoed in my ear at the same time.
[Target selected: canine, Luna.]
[Final reward has been redeemed. No replacement will be issued.]
My palm burned. My chest felt like someone had carved out a hollow.
I swallowed hard, forced back the tears, and said each word clearly, “We’re done.”
Derek’s head snapped to the side. He froze for a few seconds, then frowned.
Break up?”
We’ve been together for so long and been through so much.
Now you want to break up?”
Beside him, Lauren spoke up timidly. “Maren, don’t blame Derek.”
“I know you wanted to save your brother, but Luna is my family too.”
“After my mom died, Luna and Derek were all I had. Then he
got together with you, and it was just me and Luna.”
Without Luna, I wouldn’t have made it through these years.”
But two weeks ago, Luna was diagnosed with kidney failure…”
I suddenly realized something. I turned to Derek. “You knew
two weeks ago this dog was dying. You already planned to use the reward on her.”
Derek pressed his lips together. “I should have told you
beforehand. Not discussing it with you was wrong. But we
earned the reward together. I have a say too.”
couldn’t believe my ears. “So your decision was to save her dog?”
Luna isn’t just any dog.” Derek’s voice dropped. “Lauren has
been my friend since we were kids. I owe her.”
Besides, your brother has been gone for a year. Your parents
have slowly accepted it. Bringing him back now would upend everyone’s life again.”
But Luna has only been dead three days. There’s still time to fix everything.”
I looked at him and suddenly understood.
It wasn’t that he didn’t know Grant mattered.
He just thought I had already endured the pain for so long
that I could endure it a few more years.
But Lauren’s tears were right in front of him.
She cried louder than I did, so she deserved to get what she wanted.
“Derek, stop.” Lauren stood up, holding Luna. “Maren just lost
her last chance to get her brother back. She’s hurting. Cut her some slack”
She sounded so gracious it made me look like the petty one.
Derek nodded and reached for my hand.
I stepped back and threw my ring at his face.
“I’m not sad.”
“Derek, I’ll make you miserable until the day you die.”
