The Kingmaker My Fiance Sold Me To My Broke Ex Chapter 05
The freezing seawater swallowed me whole, and the impact felt like it nearly tore my insides apart.Â
When I opened my eyes again, the first thing that hit me was the sharp stink of fish and diesel.Â
“Thank God, you’re awake, miss.” An old fisherman wrapped a thick wool blanket around me.Â
Shivering, I pushed myself up and immediately reached for my left ankle.Â
The electronic ankle monitor was still there.Â
I shut my eyes in pain, but then a desperate thought took shape in my mind: Chloe had seen me jump off the cliff with her own eyes. In these reef–choked waters, my odds of surviving should have been close to zero. As long as Vic Carson believed I was dead, he wouldn’t come after me right away.Â
This was my only chance to breathe.Â
borrowed the fisherman’s phone and, with trembling fingers, typed “Vickson Shipping” and ” Pioneer Group” into the search bar.Â
The top headline popped up immediately: [Vance Capital Unilaterally Ends Negotiations–Pioneer Group’s Transnational Gold Shipping Route Blocked, Company Faces Massive Breach–of–Contract Crisis!]Â
A bitter laugh slipped out of me.Â
Vic had been willing to offer me up like a toy just to secure that route, only to end up watching everything collapse anyway.Â
I knew Alvin too well. Once he decided to cut off negotiations, he would never leave Vic any room to recover. What I hadn’t expected was that he hated me this deeply. Deeply enough to destroy even my so- called fiancé just to get back at me.Â
“Thank you for saving me, but I have to go.” I handed the phone back to the fisherman and staggered off the boat despite his attempts to stop me.Â
The night was pitch–black. I hid myself inside an abandoned cold–storage warehouse. The temperature inside was brutal, but I had no choice. I needed to stay hidden until I figured out how to get this tracker off my ankle. Then I could send Vic and Chloe straight to hell.Â
urled up behind a few rusted metal barrels, IÂ shivered so hard my teeth wouldn’t stop chattering.Â
Then the warehouse door suddenly creaked open.Â
Someone had come in.Â
My heart nearly jumped into my throat.Â
Was it one of Vic’s men? Had they found out I was still alive?Â
Footsteps echoed through the empty warehouse, getting closer and closer to the dark corner where I was hiding. When that tall figure finally blocked out the moonlight spilling through the doorway, I looked up in despair.Â
Alvin.Â
How had he found me?Â
A terrible thought hit me at once: he was the CEO of Vance Capital. If he wanted Vic alive, Vic would obey him like a dog. So was this it? Had he come here with Vic to catch me? Did he want to watch the woman who had humiliated him get dragged back and tortured all over again?Â
“Move…” I forced down the pain ripping through my chest, braced a hand against the freezing wall, and tried to slip past him.Â
“Where do you think you’re going?”Â
The next second, he grabbed my wrist and yanked me hard, dragging me straight into his arms.Â
“Let go of me!” I screamed, pounding my fists against his chest.Â
He didn’t loosen his grip. Instead, his arms tightened around me.Â
“Where else are you planning to run?” Alvin lowered his head, his voice violent with rage. “What, can’t wait to crawl back into Vic’s bed? Tell me, MissÂ
Rockwood–after you threw me away without a shred of mercy and crushed every last bit of my pride, this is what you got in return? Some piece of trash who passes you around like a toy?”Â
I froze. “You… you didn’t come here with Vic?”Â
A flicker of surprise flashed through Alvin’s eyes, then turned to anger. He abruptly let go of me. “You think I’d ever work with a bottom–feeding bastard like that?”Â
Not together. They weren’t together!Â
The thought shattered the last of my defenses.Â
I remembered Vic’s lies. Chloe’s gun. My family, ruined by the two of them working hand in hand.Â
sucked in a breath, then suddenly yanked up my pant leg and exposed the ankle monitor.Â
Help me.” I lifted my head and looked straight at him. “Alvin, help me get this thing off. If you give me my freedom, I swear… I’ll make Vic Carson lose everything. I’ll make them both crawl through the nud and beg for a life they can’t have!”Â
Silence fell over the freezing warehouse.Â
Alvin lowered his gaze and coldly looked me over–my swollen face, the raw, bleeding skin on my wrists, and finally the blinking red light on the monitor.Â
For one foolish second, I thought seeing what had happened to me might stir some shred of old feeling in him.Â
Instead, a mocking smile slowly curled across his face.Â
“Help you?” Alvin took a step back. “Eve, you think far too highly of yourself. You expect me to risk.Â
offending the local kingpin for a selfish, vain woman like you?”Â
“You’re not worth it.”Â
