The Nobody He Killed was Royalty Chapter 05

The Nobody He Killed was Royalty Chapter 05

Freya’s POV

One day, the door opens and my father walks in. “How are you feeling? Any better?” nod. “Much better.”

He pulls me into his arms. The familiar scent makes my eyes sting.

“Stop blaming yourself for everything.” His voice is low and Cotle. “I never blamed you. No one could’ve predicted he’d change like that.”

I hold him tight, can’t find any words.

He pats my back, then lets go. His expression turns serious. “You’re almost recovered. What are you planning to do next?”

“I’ll stay with you.” I say. “I’m not going anywhere.”

He nods. “It’s time you started learning to manage the clan. And what do you think about that snake? Don’t tell me you’ll go soft on him. That would disappoint me.”

I lift my head. My throat is hoarse from all the crying,

“I hate him. I want him to feel what it’s like to lose everything.”

A satisfied smile crosses his face. “Good. Even if you don’t do it, I’ll make sure he suffers.”

I freeze. “What do you mean?”

He stands up and walks to the window. “After you left, I kept trying to find out where you were. I knew you’d bonded with a serpent.”

He turns back, his gaze sharp. “But those snakes don’t know how to do business. Don’t know how to deal

with other clans. If I hadn’t been helping them in

secret, the neighboring clans would’ve swallowed them up years ago.”

My heart jumps.

“Now,” he says coldly, “it’s time to settle the score.”

He leaves the room. I sit on the bed alone.

Memories flood back.

Five years ago, I climbed over the clan walls, thinking I’d find freedom outside. My father kept saying I was too young, didn’t understand how dangerous it was out there. But I didn’t believe him. I wanted to see the world for myself.

Reality taught me fast.

The different clans traded with each other, but they kept their guard up. No one wanted to be my friend, let alone trust me. I wandered around for two months, tired and hungry, starting to regret leaving.

That’s when I found him in the mountains.

Adrian was lying in a pile of rocks, covered in wounds. His scales were dull and faded in the sunlight.

I could’ve walked away.

But I didn’t. I carried him down the mountain and treated his wounds with herbs. It took three days

before he woke up.

When he opened his eyes and saw me, all I saw was suspicion.

I told him it was okay, I wouldn’t hurt him.

He asked why I saved him.

I told him it was because I saw someone hurt and anted to help.

He went quiet for a long time. Then he thanked me.

Later, he brought me back to his clan. Those were good days. He was gentle with me. We walked by the river together, talked under the moonlight. I thought I’d found happiness.

When we bonded, I didn’t tell him who I really was, Not because I didn’t want to. I cherished how pure it

felt. I didn’t want him to know whose daughter I was, didn’t want him treating me differently because of my background.

I just wanted him to love me for me.

The irony is, he never really loved me at all.

Everything changed after his brother died. He became the clan leader and brought that woman back.

he looked at me changed. Like From then on, the waywas a stranger. A manipulative liar.

I understand now. The serpent clan survived all these

years not because they were capable. It was because my father protected them from the shadows.

He was worried about my safety, so he helped them survive the conflicts between clans.

If my father stops protecting them, what happens?

I can imagine.

The clans circling around them will swarm in like sharks smelling blood and tear them apart.

I should feel satisfied. But I just feel empty.

My father is right. I need to grow up. Can’t be naive like before.

This world is brutal. Clans fight each other constantly.

The weak get devoured. Only the strong can protect the people they care about.

My father is getting old. He’s still powerful, but I can see the wrinkles around his eyes, feel the weight on his shoulders.

I’m his only heir. One day, the entire clan will be my responsibility.

I need to learn to be wise like him. Ruthless like him.

Navigate this world of schemes and power like him.

For the clan. For the child I lost. For myself.

I’ve only been studying with my father for a few days when news comes from the serpent clan. Adrian found out about the fake body we left behind.

I didn’t think he’d stay with that corpse for an entire week.

He loved that woman so much. Enough to lock me up and watch me and our baby die.

Why would he be so obsessed with a corpse?

I can’t figure it out. Don’t want to think about it anymore.

Apparently the body didn’t rot after a week, so he got suspicious and called in a mage. The mage told him it

was a magical construct, not a real person.

Then he interrogated the guards. Questioned Kael.

Questioned the pharmacist.

They told him other beastmen broke in that day and rescued me.

Now he’s sent out the entire serpent clan to search for me. Even offered a bounty to the neighboring clans.
