They Came For My Will, Not Knowing Everything Was Mine Chapter 04
I didn’t unclench my left hand until I was outside the estate.Â
My palm was covered in blisters.Â
Vittorio’s car was waiting by the gate, flanked by two armored SUVS.Â
He saw the marks on my back. His expression went cold. DoÂ
you need me to call in the capos?”Â
“No.”Â
I pulled my collar straight. “The new head of the ColomboÂ
family should have a few scars. Do you have what I asked for?”Â
Everything’s ready.”Â
One week after my grandmother’s burial, the memorial massÂ
was held at the Colombo family’s hotel in Manhattan.Â
There was nothing solemn about the setup.Â
The ballroom was lined with red carpet. CongratulatoryÂ
flower arrangements for Bianca’s inheritance crowded theÂ
entrance. My grandmother’s portrait and a single white roseÂ
had been shoved into the least visible corner, Bianca’sÂ
nameplate sat in the place of honor.Â
She wore the black gown my grandmother hadÂ
commissioned for me. Around her neck was the diamondÂ
necklace she’d taken from me when I was eighteen. On herÂ
wrist was the emerald bracelet my grandmother had promised to leave me.Â
My parents announced publicly that the mass would be kept simple.Â
What really mattered, they said, was fulfilling myÂ
grandmother’s greatest wish–letting Bianca take over the Colombo family.Â
A black cushion had been set up in the corner of theÂ
ballroom for someone to kneel on.Â
On the table in front of it sat three documents.Â
The first was a public apology admitting I’d disrupted theÂ
funeral and assaulted Bianca.
The second reconfirmed my renunciation of all Colombo family assets.Â
The third was the divorce agreement Lorenzo had already $igned.Â
Internal family livestream cameras were all trained on the kneeling cushion.Â
My father had already arranged it: the second I showed up,Â
guards would confiscate my weapons and force me to kneel inÂ
front of my grandmother’s portrait and confess. At leastÂ
twenty armed soldiers lined both sides of the hall. Every exit was covered.Â
Bianca personally checked the camera angles. “When she getsÂ
here, tell them to go easy on her. We don’t want the otherÂ
families thinking we’re bullying her.”Â
My mother adjusted Bianca’s gown. “You’re too kind. That’sÂ
why she keeps taking advantage of you.”Â
Lorenzo sat at the head table, an ink pad beside him.Â
At seven p.m., the ceremony began.Â
My father handed Bianca the hotel’s board authorization andÂ
the Colombo family ring. My mother announced that fromÂ
this day forward, Bianca was the sole heir to the Colombo family.Â
Bianca took Lorenzo’s arm and accepted congratulationsÂ
from the crowd.Â
Someone asked, laughing, if the two families would beÂ
announcing a wedding soon.Â
Lorenzo didn’t deny it. He just kept glancing toward theÂ
ballroom doors.Â
The emcee called my name three times. The cushion in theÂ
corner stayed empty,Â
My mother tried calling me. The number was blocked.Â
My father’s face went stiff. He announced to the room, “We’llÂ
wait ten more minutes. If she doesn’t show, she forfeitsÂ
everything Valeria Jeft her,”Â
Ten minutes passed. The doors stayed shut.Â
Lorenzo’s fingers drummed on the table. His assistant askedÂ
quietly if they should keep waiting.Â
“No.” Lorenzo closed the divorce file. “She has nowhere else toÂ
go. She’ll come back eventually.”Â
My father picked up the microphone. “From this day forwardÂ
the Colombo family has only one daughter–Bianca.”Â
Applause filled the ballroom.Â
Bianca picked up the inheritance documents. Her pen wasÂ
about to touch paper when the hotel doors were suddenlyÂ
pushed open from the outsde.Â
stood in the doorway in black, holding the wooden box withÂ
the broken rosary and the burned pouch inside.Â
Behind me: Vittorio, the family elders, and dozens of armed loyalists.Â
My father’s guards reached for their guns. Vittorio’s men drewÂ
first. One of them fired a shot into the ceiling.Â
The crystal chandelier shook violently. Shards rained ontoÂ
the red carpet.Â
“Anyone who draws on the true heir is a traitor to theÂ
Colombo family.”Â
The entire ballroom went silent.Â
My father’s guards exchanged glances. One by one, theyÂ
lowered their weapons.Â
Vittorio pulled out a document. “Donna Valeria left behind aÂ
notarized video recording.” Â
The screen lit up again.Â
My grandmother sat propped up in her hospital bed, weakÂ
but lucid as she looked into the camera.Â
If they force Matilde to renounce her inheritance-”Â
‘Activate every debt recovery clause I left behind. Immediately.”Â
