The Wedding He Turned Into a Funeral Chapter 02
His eyes flickered–panic, maybe—but he squared
his jaw. “Jade, what is this? You’re embarrassing me in front of everyone?”
Before I could answer, Melanie shrieked. She dove
into his arms and pointed at my phone on the floor. “Vincent, how does she even have a video of me getting bullied? Did she send those girls after me in the bathroom?”
Her face crumpled. She clutched her head and
shook. “Please don’t hurt me. It’s all my fault.”
Vincent wrapped her up. “Melanie, I’ve got you.”
He’d said that to me once.
I was walking home late from work, got held up at knifepoint. I handed over my cash. Then the guy got
ideas and dragged me into an alley.
He was ripping at my shirt when Vincent showed up. He draped his jacket over me, pulled me in, whispered, “You’re okay. I’m here.”
That memory hit me hard–but Vincent’s yell yanked me back.
“I can’t believe you’d be that cruel! Sending people
after her?”
“I know what it feels like to be attacked,” I shot
back. “Why would I do that to someone else?”
He just stared, disgusted. “That whole thing was
me too. I set it all up.”
Ice filled my veins. I opened my mouth–nothing came out. My throat locked.
Then my stomach clenched. A dull ache.
I was two weeks pregnant. I hadn’t told him yet. I’d planned to share the news right after the ceremony.
Guess that wasn’t happening.
Right then Melanie gagged. She touched her belly,
looking at Vincent with this soft, adoring smile.
“Vincent–I think the baby just kicked.”
He reached over and rested his palm on her
stomach, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
I nearly threw up.
