The Twin Who Got The Ring And The One Who Got The Altar Chapter 11

The Twin Who Got The Ring And The One Who Got The Altar Chapter 11

That evening, I went to see my parents

They were in the main roomMom mending clothes, Dad halfasleep over a wornout almanac

I sat down without saying anything

Mom looked up, her needle pausing. Eat yet?”

Yeah.”

She looked back down and kept sewing. The thread pulled through the fabric, drew taut, loosened

I said, Mom, I have something to say.”

She stopped

About the other day,I said. I’m not mad at you.”

Her needle stilled

Not because I don’t care,I said. Because I understand you’re scared for Sera. I get it.”

But Mom,I said, from now on, don’t make decisions for me. Good or bad. My road is mine to walk.”

She set down her sewing. Her eyes were wet. “Willa”

Don’t say you’re sorry,I said. It doesn’t change anything. Just do better from here.”

Dad stirredhe’d probably been awake the whole time. He didn’t speak. Just sat up, cleared his throat, and pushed his coffee cup across the table toward me

That was it. That was all

I looked at the cup. Picked it up. Took a sip. It was bitter, gone cold, the flavor faded. But I finished it

A few days later, Sera showed up at my door

She came in, sat across from me, looked at the notebooks and laptop on my table. After a long silence, she said, Willa, I want to help

I looked up. With what?”

Anything. She said. I’m just sitting around. Tell me what to do.”

I looked at her. You don’t have the strength for heavy work.”

Then give me something light, she said. I can handle that.”

I thought, Go shoot video for Dottie. Film

her pickling the mushroomsjust on your phone. Send it to me.”

Sera blinked. That’s it?”

That’s it for now,I said. Do that right, and we’ll see.”

She stood. Okay.”

At the door, she stopped and turned back. Willa, she said. I really am sorry.”

I looked at her

Not that the plan failed, she said. I mean it.”

I was quiet for a second. I know.”

She nodded and left

I looked back down at my notes. Something in my chest shiftedjust a little. Not forgiveness. Not not forgiveness. Justa little lighter

The year came

Elder Granger called the hollow to Granger Hall for a meeting

I stood and read the numbers aloud

Old Man Jessup’s herb business went from twelve thousand to thirtyeight thousand

Dottie Perkins’s pickled morels went from two or three thousand to fourteen

Uncle Gus negotiated a bulk dealthe first

shipment was a thousand pounds, payment already cleared

Total mountain goods sold through the online

storefront, nearly two hundred thousand more than the year before

I finished. Paused

The hall was quiet

Elder Granger sat at the front and looked at me for a long time

Then he said, Today, we revisit the rules.”

The meeting lasted two hours. There was debate-

some said the old ways couldn’t change, others said the rule existed to protect the hollow, and if it was still protected, the rule had done its job

Finally, Elder Granger made the call

The

Keeper serves the hollow not only by staying in it

Any work done on behalf of the community counts as keeping the hollow.”
