The Real Mafia Heiress Chapter 08
Mrs. Bennett’s throat went dry, her voice trembling violently. “Miss, I–I can make reparations-”
“Reparations?” I let out a bitter laugh. “That necklace is my mother’s final gift to me, a talisman she sacrificed her own health to beg from a priest. What could you possibly offer to replace something that priceless?”
Mrs. Bennett had no reply left to give.
At that moment, Lilith lost her patience entirely. She
stormed forward, roughly yanking Mrs. Bennett away
from me to stand between us, glaring furiously. “What are the two of you whispering about?”
She twisted to face her mother, suspicion clouding her
expression. “Mom, is that bitch crying and begging
you to let her off the hook again?”
Mrs. Bennett parted her lips to speak, but swallowed the words back down.
Lilith’s frown deepened. “Mom? Why won’t you talk?
What did she say to you? Did she threaten you or twist your words to turn you against me?”
“Don’t be scared of her–speak your mind. If she’s
threatening you, we’ll call our people. I refuse to
believe some homeless leech can run wild on Moretti territory.”
Mrs. Bennett finally lifted her head. She glanced at
Lilith, then back at me, her lips trembling nonstop.
After a long, agonizing pause, she forced out a broken
sentence. “Lilith, stop talking.”
Lilith blinked in shock. “What? Why can’t I speak? Have you really been intimidated by this bitch?”
Mrs. Bennett’s voice wavered, barely audible. “I said
stop. Things aren’t what you think they are.”
Lilith’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. “Aren’t what I
think? Then what’s the truth? Is it really true what that bitch said- are you just her housekeeper?”
The thought struck her as ridiculous, and she burst into mocking laughter. “Only a mooch like her could dream up such a ludicrous lie. Mom, shut all these people down! Tell everyone loud and clear who owns
these villas and the Moretti Group!”
The classmates all fixed their eyes on Mrs. Bennett, baying for blood.
“Yeah, Mrs. Bennett, claim your identity! Show them
how out of line they are!”
“A penniless orphan and a crew of fake actors don’t get
to act high and mighty on your land. Put them in their
place!”
“Lilith’s waiting for you to defend her!”
Pressed by the whole room’s expectant stares, Mrs.
Bennett stood rigid and silent.
Lilith nudged her shoulder, confused and impatient. “Mom, say something!”
Mrs. Bennett stared at the floor, her voice a faint
mosquito buzz no one could miss. “What they’re saying… it’s the truth.”
A suffocating silence descended upon the living room.
The smile on Lilith’s face froze completely.
She stared at her mother, utterly unable to process the words. “What did you just say?”
Mrs. Bennett couldn’t bear to meet her daughter’s
eyes, her voice shrinking even smaller. “Everything
Miss Moretti told you is true. She owns the Moretti
Group, the city villa downtown, and this family estate.”
“I…” She swallowed hard against the lump in her
throat. “I’m only her housekeeper.”
