The Radio Secret – My Sister In Love with My Fiance Chapter 07
Rescue crews dug us out from under the rubble thirty–six hours after the collapse.
The boy broke into a wide grin the second sunlight hit his face. “Doctor, I made it through another day. Today
feels a little softer than yesterday.”
I ruffled his hair and handed him the last two candies from my pocket. “Yeah, it’s a little better today.”
We’d been trapped in complete darkness, so I hadn’t gotten a full look at Nathan’s injuries back then. In daylight, I saw brutal bruising covering nearly his entire back–no open lacerations, but deep, disfiguring contusions from the falling concrete.
Guilt crashed over me, yet Nathan brushed it off without a second thought.
“I would’ve charged after that kid too, even if you hadn’t run out there. This injury isn’t your fault.”
No matter how lightly he dismissed it, I stayed by his side every shift until his bruises faded completely.
“Dr. Keith, someone’s here to see you!”
My blood ran cold the moment I laid eyes on Logan. His hair matted with dust, face gaunt and exhausted, his button–down shirt torn to rags, fresh scrapes and cuts streaked across his cheeks.
He closed the distance in three strides and pulled me against him. Smoke and cordite clung to his clothes; his body went slack the moment he touched me.
“Rosie. I finally found you.”
His next sentence hit without pause: “Come home with me.”
Home? As what? The sister who forgave? The fiancée who stayed? That woman was buried under rubble thirty–six hours ago.
“This place is lethal. A woman shouldn’t endure all this chaos alone–look how much weight you’ve lost these past few months.”
He lifted a hand to brush my cheek, his eyes swimming with worry and raw longing.
I stepped backward, putting distance between us.
“How did you track me all the way out here?”
“Dr. Thompson told me you’d signed on with Doctors Without Borders. I came searching for you. Rosie, I
know I messed up everything before. Just come home with me.”
Dust flaked off his clothes with every small movement. I couldn’t fathom the winding, dangerous journey it
had taken for him to reach this remote war zone, nor why he’d bothered chasing me down at all.
He caught the cold detachment in my stare, and hurt flickered across his face.
“You hate me, don’t you? I get it if you do–but don’t punish yourself by hiding away in this hell to hurt me.”
“Every single day here brings shelling and gunfire. You’re constantly in mortal danger.”
“You have no idea how little I’ve slept since you left. Night after night, I dream you get hurt, that you’re gone forever. The fear eats me alive.”
Once upon a time, those words would’ve pulled tears from me. Now all I felt was hollow revulsion.
“You’ve found me safe and unharmed, so you don’t need to lose sleep anymore. I can take care of myself.”
“Logan, you left Calista all alone back home to chase me. That’s cruel to her. You need to head back and look
after her properly.”
“I…” Logan hesitated, voice cracking. “Calista and I–
we never got married. We never stayed together.
Rosie… I can’t stop thinking about you.”
Rage exploded through my veins. I raised my palm and struck him hard across the cheek, then hurled every loose metal medical supply container within reach straight at his body.
“Logan Black, you’re despicable! How could you do this to Calista?”
He stood motionless, letting me unleash every ounce of my fury. When I finally wore myself out, he fixed his sorrowful gaze on me.
“I’m so sorry, Rosie. I never wanted it to turn out like this, but I couldn’t control my heart.”
“I couldn’t bring myself to marry Calista when every thought in my head belonged to you. I know I’m a terrible, selfish man.”
Logan grabbed my wrist and pressed my palm against his bruised cheek, urging me to hit him again. “If beating me eases your pain, keep going. Hit me as hard as you want–even kill me, I deserve it.”
I yanked my hand away, sickened by his display, unable to stand the sight of him another second.
Tears pooled in Logan’s eyes, agony thick in every word. “I’m trapped without you, drowning in my own suffering. I don’t understand what’s wrong with me.”
“You’re the finest heart surgeon. Open me up. Tell me what’s wrong.”
