GIULIA’S POV
Mirella didn’t get to enjoy much sleep.
Not long after Mom’s call, the police knocked on her
door and took her entire family to the station for questioning.
While I was receiving treatment at the hospital, the police called me.
“Is this Giulia Bellandi?”
“We need you to come to the station as the reporting
victim and assist with the investigation into Mirella’s family.”
I took the medical report the doctor had just prepared and stood.
He stopped me.
“Wait. I haven’t admitted you yet.”
I gave him an apologetic smile.
“Something urgent came up. I’ll come back after I deal with it.”
I left the hospital and took a cab straight to the Chicago
Police Department district station.
After a female officer registered my arrival, she led me into an interview room.
Mirella sat slumped in a chair.
The moment she saw me, she exploded.
“Giulia Bellandi, you little monster!”
“You had our whole family arrested over some stupid gold?”
“God will punish you! You’ll walk outside and get hit by a car!”
The young officer taking her statement snapped at her.
“Stop shouting!”
“This is a Chicago police station, not your house.”
“Watch your language and your attitude.”
Mirella restrained herself, but she continued arguing with the police.
“Officer, I’m Giulia’s aunt. We’re family.”
“What happened tonight was a private family matter.”
“All this talk about robbery and assault is something Giulia invented.”
The older officer tapped the table.
“We’ll determine whether it’s a family matter.”
“Even if it is, taking someone else’s property without permission is a crime.”
“So is physically injuring the person who reported you.”
For the first time, fear appeared on Mirella’s face.
“This is a misunderstanding. It has to be.”
“The gold was a gift for my son’s wedding.”
“When we went to pick it up, she thought giving us
gold meant she could disrespect her elders.”
“We got angry and hit her a couple of times.”
“Adults discipline younger relatives in every family.”
“Sometimes people don’t know their own strength.”
The older officer looked at me.
“Giulia Bellandi, your turn.”
I took out my phone and opened my call log.
“At 10:38 a.m. on May sixth, you called and demanded
one hundred and thirty ounces of gold as a gift for your son’s wedding.”
“I clearly refused.”
“At 10:39, you posted in the family chat that I had
agreed to give your son one hundred and thirty ounces of gold.”
“That was a lie. I refused again.”
“At 9:49 p.m., your family came to my home and demanded the gold a third time.”
“I refused a third time.”
“After I explicitly said no three times, you assaulted me and stole my property.”
I pulled the medical report from my bag and placed it in front of her.
“This is the diagnosis my doctor just gave me.”
“I have serious retinal damage, a mild concussion, and multiple soft–tissue injuries across my body.”
“This isn’t a family dispute.”
“I never agreed to give you anything.”
“This wasn’t an elder slapping a child a couple of times.”
“This was home invasion, aggravated assault, and robbery.”
“Your entire family committed a felony.”
Her expression changed, but her eyes still held a threat.
“Did you think about your mother before you had us arrested?”
“How is she supposed to face the family now?”
“The entire Italian community will call her a traitor to her own blood!”
I laughed.
“I am not my mother.”
“How she chooses to live from now on has nothing to do with me.”
Mirella’s panic became visible.
At that moment, another officer entered.
He placed a stack of documents on the table.
The older officer read them carefully, then looked at Mirella.
“Your son told us everything.”
“He said you brought him to Giulia’s home to demand the gold.”
“He also said you told him to take it by force if she refused.”
“According to him, Giulia is his cousin, so there was
nothing wrong with taking her gold.”
“He said Giulia and her widowed mother had always been easy to bully.”
Mirella’s eyelid twitched.
Her fingertips trembled.
She licked her lips.
“Giulia, I never treated you like an outsider.”
