The Day They Stole My Voice, I Started My Rise Chapter 01

The Day They Stole My Voice, I Started My Rise Chapter 01

During the laboratory explosion, I pushed Aubrey, the student closest to the fire, away.

The next second, the Chemical Reagent Container exploded right in front of me.

My vision went white.

My throat felt like I had swallowed a handful of sand.

My mother, Dr. Evelyn Baldwin, was the Medical Director of

Harrington University Medical Center.

She was also Aubrey’s sponsor.

When she arrived, the first thing she did was check the marks

on Aubrey’s arm.

grabbed her Lab Coat and pointed at my throat.

But she lowered her voice.

“Don’t make this a big deal!”

“Aubrey just got the Graduate Fellowship.”

If the accident is blamed on her, her future will be ruined.”

My husband, Theodore, was the University’s Legal Counsel.

He placed the Incident Report in front of me and motioned

for me to sign it.

“You’re the professor.”

“She’s the student.”

Take more of the responsibility.”

“People will only praise you for being responsible.”

I shook

my head.

Tears fell from the pain.

Aubrey stood at the door, looking frightened.

Professor, I really didn’t know the reagent couldn’t be heated.”

Theodore immediately stepped in front of her.

‘She’s already scared.”

“Don’t look at her like that.”

stared at the report that said “minor inhalation irritation.”

My fingers trembled so badly that I couldn’t hold the pen.

They all thought my throat would only hurt for a few days.

But they didn’t know…

Before the explosion, Aubrey had leaned close to my ear and whispered:

“Professor, once you lose your voice, you probably won’t be

able to stand on the podium anymore, right?”

“Sign it.”

“Don’t make everyone look bad.”

Theodore forced the black

pen into my hand.

The tip pressed against the Incident Report.

I shook my head desperately and pointed at my throat.

My lips moved.

But not a single sound came out.

Theodore frowned.

Bree, you became an Associate Professor at twenty–seven.”

“Taking a punishment for a lab mistake won’t affect you much.”

“But for her, this could become a stain on her entire future.”

And I drafted the legal agreement for the Research

Laboratory.”

“If this gets out, the Board of Trustees will hold me

responsible first. Just sign it.”

I looked at the man who had shared my bed for three years.

My heart grew colder and colder.

The Emergency Department doors opened.

My mother, Evelyn, walked in wearing a Lab Coat.

She was holding several test reports.

Aubrey followed behind her.

Tears were still on her face.

A bandage wrapped around her wrist.

Theodore immediately walked over.

How are Aubrey’s test results?”

My mother looked at the reports.

Her brows relaxed.

It’s fine.”

“Her wrist is only slightly scraped.”

I already prescribed a special scar cream for her.”

“It won’t leave a mark.”

I struggled down from the stretcher and grabbed my mother’s sleeve.

I pointed at my throat, which was still bleeding.

My mother stumbled slightly when I pulled her.

Her brows tightened.

This is a hospital!”

What are you doing?”

“Stop pulling my clothes.”

“What does that look like?”

opened my mouth and used all my strength.

Only a weak hissing sound came out.

The triage nurse couldn’t stand it anymore.

Dr. Baldwin, Bree’s breathing sounds wrong.”

Should we perform a laryngoscopy?”

My mother coldly pulled her hand away.

No.”

‘It’s just minor inhalation irritation.”

Her hyperventilation caused laryngospasm, which makes it

look worse than it is.”

“She just needs fluids and rest.”

‘She’s always been like this.”

Something happens, and she makes it seem much bigger

than it is.”

She turned to Theodore.

“Did she sign it?”

Theodore sighed and shook his head.

She’s still acting up.”

My mother sighed.

‘Look, Bree, you need to be more considerate.”

Aubrey is an orphan.”

She worked so hard to become a Graduate Student.”

“You know how difficult that was.”

*If you ruin her future over something this small, can you

really live with your conscience?”

I closed my eyes in despair.

Conscience?

She was talking to me about conscience?

Where was her conscience when Aubrey whispered those

cruel words into my ear?

The Emergency Department doors opened again.

A young doctor walked in quickly.

The badge on his coat read ENT Department, Lucas.

He held a small flashlight and walked straight toward me.

Open your mouth.”

“Let me take a look.”

I looked at him like he was my last hope.

opened my mouth as wide as I could.

The flashlight shone into my throat.

Lucas’s expression changed instantly,

She has three–concave signs.”

Severe epiglottic swelling!”

This is a severe Chemical Exposure Injury!”

He suddenly stood up and shouted at the nurses.

Prepare for Intubation!”

“Start Emergency Priority Protocol now!”

My mother’s expression darkened.

She quickly walked over and stood in front of the stretcher,

“Who allowed you to activate Emergency Priority Protocol?”

Lucas froze.

“Dr. Baldwin, her airway is severely swollen.”

“She could suffocate at any moment.”

My mother remained calm.

She’s my daughter.”

I know how serious her condition is better than you do.”

Emergency Priority Protocol is for real emergencies.”

“Not something to use because someone wants attention or sympathy.”
