Meanwhile, Sera was at Starfall Kingdom, nearly nineteen hundred miles away.
She had an oversized Stitch headband on her head and a
half–melted ice cream cone dripping down her fingers.
“Ronan, this sea salt flavor’s way too sweet. I don’t want it.”
She shoved the cone into Ronan’s hand and looped her arm through his.
“Let’s do the Mega Coaster! We missed it last time!”
Ronan took the melting cone and tossed it into the nearest trash can.
Weren’t you just saying your stomach hurt? Your period?”
Sera blinked up at him, playfully. “That ended ages ago. I only
said it yesterday to teach Zoe not to trust people so easily.”
Ronan went still.
He pulled out his phone. Lit the screen. Nothing.
Sera tugged his arm. “Ronan? What are you checking?”
He jammed the phone back in his pocket.
Nothing. Let’s go.”
The coaster crested the highest point, and the bottom dropped out of the world.
Wind screamed past their ears. Sera shrieked beside him.
But Ronan’s head turned on instinct toward the empty seat on his left.
Two years ago, he’d tricked me onto this same ride.

Ronan, I’m scared!”
He’d smiled and laced his fingers through mine. “What’s there to be scared of? I’m right here.”
Now the coaster plunged, and his left hand white–knuckled the cold safety bar.
Something that felt a lot like panic closed around his ribs.
I believed everything. A street vendor could short me change and I wouldn’t notice..

The ride ended. Sera bounced off the platform, grinning.
Ronan stopped. “Has Zoe texted you?”
Sera’s smile locked in place. She pouted and wound the ribbon between her fingers.
“No… Why do you keep worrying about her? Can’t you just be here with me today?”
Ronan’s brow creased. His voice dropped cold.
“She’s alone. It’s not safe.”
Sera rolled her eyes dismissively.
“What’s going to happen? You babied her and now she thinks
she’s special. She’s useless, Ronan. All she does is stir up drama.”
Ronan’s face went dark. “I’m the one who babied her. She’s
trusting because I told her she didn’t need to doubt anyone
but me. She’s your best friend, Sera. You really want to talk about her like that?”
Sera’s mouth opened. Closed. Her fingers dug into her purse strap.
“I… I was just joking.”
Ronan didn’t let up. “Did she message you or not?”
