The Alpha Who Chose Wrong Chapter 05
I woke in a locked room inside the Ironwood clinic.
My chest felt hollow.
The bond still hung between Evander and me, torn but not gone. A rejection did not become final until the
other mate accepted.
I could feel his anger through it.
Worse, I could feel his doubt.
The night doctor entered with my blood results.
He looked nervous.
“Nerys, what medication do you take every morning?”
“My mother says it’s for my heart.”
“Who prescribed it?”
“The old pack physician. Mom manages the refills.”
He placed the report beside me.
“You don’t have a heart condition.”
“What?”
“The drug in your blood is a powerful wolf suppressant. Judging by the concentration in your
tissue, you’ve taken it for years.”
My hands began to shake.
“I’m wolfless.”
“No. Your wolf has been chemically blocked.”
The doctor showed me the scan from my admission.
Healthy heart. Healthy lungs. Dense muscle changes
that came before a delayed shift.
Nothing in my body matched the weak girl described in my childhood file.
“Stopping the drug without supervision can be dangerous,” he said. “Your first shift may come hard
and fast. But it will come.”
“Why didn’t anyone find this before?”
“Every sample was sent through pack administration.
Your mother controlled the records.”
The truth was bigger than two pills.
She had built an entire medical history around making me small.
The door opened.
My mother entered.
She saw the report and froze.
“Leave us,” she told the doctor.
“This is my patient.”
“I run health administration for this pack. Leave.”
He did, but not before sliding a business card beneath the report.
Northlake Pack Medical Center.
Seattle.
My mother locked the door.
“Why?” I asked.
“You were difficult from birth. The medicine made you easier to control.”
“It kept me from shifting.”
“Odette was always meant to lead. Two dominant daughters would have torn this family apart.”
“You knew I had a wolf.”
“Your first tests showed unusual dominance. Your
sister needed the confidence to become Luna. You never needed that life.”
Twenty–one years of shame became one clean truth.
I had never been defective.
My mother had made me appear that way so Odette could shine.
“Tell Evander.”
“Why would I destroy your sister’s future over a
laboratory report?”
“Because I’m your daughter too.”
Her face did not soften.
“You were the daughter who could be sacrificed.”
She left with the original report.
The doctor returned minutes later and closed the door.
“I sent a digital copy to Northlake before she arrived.
Their toxicology department handles suppressed–shift
cases, and they can protect your records from Ironwood.”
“Why are you helping me?”
“Because a medical system that obeys a family instead of a patient is not medicine.”
He gave me a sealed packet of test results and warned
me not to take another pill.
It was the first proof anyone had ever placed directly in my hands.
Evander came an hour later.
My mother had already taken the report.
He stood beside the door as if coming closer might be dangerous.
“Odette needs surgery on her wrist.”
“My mother drugged me for years.”
His brow tightened.
“What?”
“The pills suppressed my wolf. I was never wolfless.”
“Where is the report?”
“Mom took it.”
He closed his eyes for a moment.
“Nerys, this has to stop.”
“You think I’m lying again.”
“I think you are hurt and desperate.”
“Because you rejected me.”
“Because you attacked the woman this pack needs as
Luna.”
I looked at the man who had once heard every change
in my voice.
Now he heard only what protected his decision.
“What do you want from me?”
“Sign a statement admitting the attack. The board will release you from detention. You can live outside the
main territory.”
“And Odette?”
“The Luna ceremony will happen at the next full moon.”
“Will you mark her?”
His silence cut deeper than an answer.
“Did our nights mean anything?”
His wolf pushed against the bond.
Evander forced it down.
“They were a weakness I should have controlled.”
Something inside me went quiet.
I picked up the pen beside the bed.
I did not sign his confession.
I signed the transfer request printed on the back of the
Northlake card.
Then I looked directly into his eyes.
“I, Nerys Vale, accept your rejection.”
The bond snapped.
Evander staggered.
His hand struck the wall.
I felt nothing from him after that.
No anger.
No desire.
No love.
Only silence.
The Northlake doctor arranged my transfer before my mother could stop it.
Ironwood wanted the scandal gone, so the board approved my release before sunrise.
I left Colorado with one suitcase.
No one from my family called.
Evander did not come to the airport.
When the plane crossed the Ironwood border, a low
growl rose inside my chest.
The wolf they had silenced for years was finally waking
- up.
