Swapping Parents Every September, But They Only Choose My Sister Chapter 09

Before I could answer, Dad became anxious.

“How can you do that?

“If you leave with Aveline, are you planning to stay there and

never come back?”

Mom snapped back.

“So what if I am?”

They quickly began arguing again.

Arden stood nearby.

Unlike when she was a child, she had no interest in stopping

them. She kept scrolling through her phone.

“Aveline, lend me some money.

“Dad wants to keep his care aide, and I can’t afford it.”

I answered flatly, “Then don’t hire one. Whoever has him is responsible.”

She gave a cold snort and stopped speaking to me.

During the year Mom was under my care, she needed major

back surgery. I still didn’t return in person, but I hired a good private aide.

There was never a moment when the hospital needed a

family decision and couldn’t reach anyone.

Mom’s surgery went well, and she recovered smoothly.

But the closer September came, the more anxious she became.

She called me almost every day.

Aveline, can you take responsibility for me next year too?

“I have money. I won’t make you pay much. Just don’t leave

me entirely to your sister.

“My health is poor. If something serious happens, she’ll let me die!”

said nothing.

At last, Mom cried in front of me. “I’m sorry. Your father and I

shouldn’t have spent all those years refusing to take

responsibility for you, I was young and foolish. Please don’t hate me.

I’m not asking you to forgive me or be close to me again. I’m

only asking you to help when it truly matters. Please help me stay alive.”

I drew a deep breath.

‘Unless it’s an emergency, don’t contact me.”

Mom agreed at once.

“All right. All right.

“Thank you, Aveline.”

After fighting for most of their lives, my parents even

seriously discussed living together again so they could both receive my care.

But the attempt lasted only two days.

From then on, whichever parent was assigned to me each year was delighted.

The one assigned to Arden looked as if they were heading to an execution.

One year, Dad developed heart trouble.

He contacted Arden repeatedly, but she never answered.

After leaving the hospital, he posted a public statement on social media.

[As of today, I, Dorian Whitmore, disown Arden Whitmore as my daughter.]

heard that afterward, he even retired early.

In the years Arden was responsible for him, he no longer

dared to work himself into the ground.

But Dad had always been in poor health and had a terrible temper.

Before he turned seventy, he died from multiple complications.

In the days before his death, he must have sensed it coming.

He went alone to the memorial grounds, bought a burial plot,

and listed only me as his emergency contact.

When I returned to arrange the funeral, I paused before his headstone.

Only one family member was named on the headstone.

Aveline Whitmore.

Mom came to stand beside me, her movements tentative.

Your father truly understood his mistakes in the end.

“Now… you’re the only daughter either of us recognizes.”

I shook my head.

“What good does that do?

The Aveline who needed you to love her and choose her was

rejected by you too many times. She disappeared a long time ago.”

glanced at the headstone.

Don’t put only my name on yours.

It won’t move me.

“It will only feel cruelly ironic.”

Mom lowered her head.

Soon, I heard her trying to stifle her sobs.

I paused for only a moment.

Then I kept walking.

My flight to Frostvale would board soon.

Royal Frostvale was there.

My research was there.

The friends who had been beside me as I grew were there.

And there were those who truly waited for me to come home.

That was my home.
