Seven Months Pregnant, My Mafia Husband Made Me Go Dutch Chapter 09
Signora looked at me with warmth in her eyes. “Your florist shop is just starting to take off. That’s where you need the money. Go do good things with it.”
She pressed a bank card into my hand. “There’s five million dollars in there. Use it for whatever business you want. You’re a capable woman. You’ll succeed.”
I stared at her, stunned.
“Don’t feel bad about it. A kindness, no matter how small, should be repaid a thousand times over. This is the Barone
family’s way of giving back.”
I opened my mouth.
My voice came out rough. “Thank you.”
Signora smiled.
The divorce papers.
Enzo still hadn’t signed them.
But I wasn’t going to stay trapped by him any longer.
One night, I took the bank card and boarded a plane to start
over somewhere far away.
Enzo showed up like a madman.
But the plane had already taken off.
“Mom, where did she go?”
He grabbed his mother’s arm, desperate.
Signora just watched the plane disappear.
“You don’t need to know.”
“She’s my wife! Of course I need to know!”
Signora finally turned to him.
“And you call yourself her husband?”
Enzo’s eyes reddened.
“Don’t make a scene.”
“You couldn’t give her a happy life. Don’t stand in the way of
her finding one.
“Mom-
His voice broke. “I’m your son.
“Yes.”
Signora sighed, heavy with regret.
“I wonder why my son turned out this way.”
Enzo choked up.
That night, back home, he pulled out his phone.
Still clinging to a sliver of hope, he dialed the number he knew by heart.
Disconnected.
His heart sank.
He tried again.
He hadn’t misheard.
Kira had canceled her number entirely.
[Mom, what’s Kira’s new number?]
He texted his mother.
Her reply: [I don’t know.]
But he knew better.
Kira wouldn’t cut off his mother.
She was cutting off him.
He ran his fingers through his hair.
Stared at the divorce papers on the table.
With trembling hands, he texted his mother again.
[Tell her to come back. I’ll sign.]
He just needed to see her one more time. He’d find a way to
make her stay.
Kira came back.
That day, he opened the door, hopeful.
But the face on the other side wasn’t hers.
“Where’s Kira?”
His brow furrowed.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Barone. I’m Kira’s attorney. Here’s my
power of attorney. I’m authorized to handle everything on her behalf.”
Enzo’s hands dropped.
In that moment, he finally accepted the truth.
There was no chance left for him and Kira.
“Fine. But I’m changing the agreement.”
The attorney sent me a message.
Enzo had changed it so that he was the one walking away
with nothing.
[Does Ms. Kira agree?]
[Yes.]
[Ms. Kira, Mr. Barone asked me to tell you
thank you.]
[He said thank you for still letting him do something for you.]
I smiled bitterly.
When his money hit my account, I donated every cent.
Money stained with my baby’s blood.
I didn’t want it.
But he didn’t deserve it either.
Signora told me everything after.
Lara was prosecuted and sentenced for poisoning someone.
Enzo’s business fell apart.
He spiraled into a mess he couldn’t escape.
Nights, he’d drink and stare at their wedding photos, lost.
I sent Signora the new products from my company.
It had become a habit.
Whenever I had good news, she was the one I shared it with.
She was the only friend I had left in the Barone family.
Enzo?
He was in the past.
My business was thriving.
I never had to beg anyone for scraps again.
