Sacrificed to My Sister: The Mate They Stole From Me Chapter 06
At lunch, a message from an unfamiliar number appeared on my phone.
Mom: [Harper, it’s Mom. Your father’s blood pressure shot up
after Ellie lost her position. She hasn’t stopped crying, and
the whole pack is in chaos. Come home so we can fix this
together. I promise I won’t be angry.]
the message three seconds of my time, then blocked gave the the number.
That afternoon, as I left High Council Hall, the Beta hurried after me.
She handed me a small envelope.
This is a welcome gift from the Council. We are glad to have you with us.”
I thanked her.
Back at the apartment, I put on water for tea and ate a
simple dinner at the little table by the window.
Chloe messaged me from a new number.
Chloe: [Harper, I know you blocked me everywhere, but I’m
worried. You’re all alone out there. Tell me where you are. I’ll
come to you, and I won’t tell anyone. We’re friends. You’re
really hurting me by doing this.]
I set down my fork.
I deleted the contact, then deactivated my old number for good.
Night settled over the city, and the lights came alive.
I washed my dishes and put them away.
Then I took a small cloth pouch from the bottom of my bag.
Inside was a smooth river stone my grandmother had
enchanted for protection.
No matter what happened, I had always kept it with me.
I placed it beneath my pillow.
Then I opened my map and deleted the marker for Vance Territory.
That place wasn’t home anymore, and that was okay.
I was building one of my own.
I set my alarm for the next morning.
Tomorrow, I would wake up with a life that belonged to me.
On my seventh day in Blackwood Territory, I was walking
home when three cars screeched to a stop outside my building.
Ellie climbed out first, her eyes red.
My mother followed close behind. The second she saw me,
she shouted, “Harper! Why did you run away?”
I kept walking.
Kaelen jumped out of the second car and strode toward me.
He blocked my path and lowered his voice, keeping it soft
enough to sound threatening and loud enough for the neighbors to hear.
“Do you really think moving to another territory can erase
what you did, Harper Vance?”
I stopped and looked at him.
My father climbed out as well, clutching his chest, his face
flushed an alarming purple.
“You went behind our backs and sent that recording straight
to Ironclaw’s Alpha! Ellie lost everything because of you!”
“She brought this on herself,” I said. “What does that have to do with me?”
Kaelen let out a humorless laugh and turned toward the
small crowd gathering nearby.
Take a good look at this woman. She tried to steal her own
sister’s mate. When that failed, she faked evidence to ruin
Ellie’s future. Now she’s hiding here and playing the victim. Is
this really the kind of person you want in your territory?”
