My Son Called Another Woman Mom, So I Walked Away for Good Chapter 04
Cormac’s expression changed.Â
“Briar. Enough.”Â
I ignored him and looked straight at Cambria.Â
“I’m Cormac Bellamy’s wife.”Â
I paused.Â
“And I’m Kellan’s biological mother.”Â
Cambria widened her eyes as if this were the first she’d heard of it.Â
Tears spilled down her cheeks as she turned to Cormac.Â
“Is that true?*Â
Cormac’s face darkened.Â
Then he grabbed a glass of wine and threw it straight in my face.Â
Cold liquid ran down my temple and soaked into my collar.Â
“Briar, did you really have to turn this into a scene?”Â
Before I could answer, Ca nbria clutched her chest and swayed.Â
The room burst into cha )s.Â
Someone rushed to catch her. Another person snapped at me.Â
“Why are you still here? She has a heart condition. What ifÂ
something happens to her?”Â
Kellan charged at me and shoved me hard.Â
“If something happens to Mom, I’ll never forgive you!”Â
I stumbled back and hit my arm against the corner of a chair.Â
Pain shot through my arm.Â
But that wasn’t what hurt most.Â
My husband was holding another woman, while my son stood inÂ
front of her and looked at me with open disgust.Â
I wiped the wine from my face.Â
Then I turned and walked out without saying another word.Â
That night, after I got home, I threw away all the snacks and fruit IÂ
had packed for our weekend at Seabriar Bay.Â
Cormac called over and over.Â
I didn’t answer.Â
At one in the morning, he texted.Â
[Kellan is terrified. You went too far.]Â
I stared at the message and felt strangely calm.Â
At sunrise. I gathered every relevant document I could find andÂ
emailed everything to an attorney.Â
At nine, the recruiter fro n the company where I had interviewed the day before called.Â
‘I’m sorry, Ms. Ellison. We’ve decided to move forward with another candidate.”Â
I frowned.Â
“I thought I had a second interview today.”Â
A pause.Â
Her tone became noticeably more formal.Â
“After further review, we don’t believe you’re the right fit.”Â
Just before she hung up. I heard someone in the background whisper.Â
“That’s the crazy mistress who crashed another woman’s birthday party.”Â
I stood on the balcony, my hands and feet going cold.Â
Not long after, someone posted a video in a local Facebook group.Â
It had been edited to show only the part where I stormed into theÂ
private room and announced that I was Cormac’s wife.Â
The caption read:Â
(Unhinged Homewrecker Crashes Birthday Party After BeingÂ
Exposed by the Actual Couple.]Â
The comments flooded in.Â
[Obviously lives off some man’s money.]Â
[Imagine deliberately upsetting a woman with a heart conditionÂ
because you’re jealous.]Â
I watched the video onceÂ
Then I called Cormac.Â
He answered immediately.Â
“So you finally decided to call.”Â
“Did youÂ
let them post that video?”Â
Silence.Â
That was answer enough.Â
“And the job?”Â
Another pause.Â
“Did you sabotage that too?”Â
“I only told them you weren’t in a stable enough place to start aÂ
new job right now.”Â
I laughed until my eyes turned.Â
“How thoughtful.”Â
“Briar, come home. We need to talk.Â
*About what?*Â
“Apologize to Cambria, ard I can make this whole thing go away”Â
For a second, I thought I had misheard him.Â
“I should apologize to her?”Â
“She ended up in the hospital last night. Kellan was terrified.”Â
My fingers tightened around the phone.Â
“What about me?”Â
Silence.Â
I asked again.Â
“You threw wine in my face. Your friends called me a mistress. DidÂ
you ever ask if I was okay?”Â
His patience finally snapped.Â
“None of that would’ve happened if you hadn’t caused a scene.”Â
I hung up.Â
Then I gathered the documents and headed to Kellan’s school.Â
Ms. Winslow looked uncomfortable when she saw me.Â
I placed a letter on her desk.Â
“From now on, please contact his father about anything school–related.”Â
She blinked.Â
“Ms. Ellison, is something wrong?”Â
“I’m getting divorced.”Â
She fell silent.Â
After leaving the school, went home and packed.Â
I didn’t own much.Â
At the bottom of a drawer, I found a photograph taken right afterÂ
Kellan was born.Â
I had barely been able to sleep from the pain of my C–section, but IÂ
had still held him all night because I was afraid to put him down.Â
Cormac had held my hard and whispered, “Briar, you did so well.”Â
I stared at the photo for a long time.Â
Then I placed it in my suitcase.Â
At four that afternoon, I left a proposed divorce settlement and aÂ
statement agreeing that Cormac could have primary physicalÂ
custody on the dining table.Â
Mom called as I reached the door.Â
“Your flight’s booked. Nine–thirty tonight.”Â
“Okay.”Â
Cormac kept calling while I was at the airport.Â
I turned my phone off.Â
When the plane lifted in:o the dark sky; I watched the city lights shrink beneath me.Â
For years, I had been exhausted.Â
This time, I was going to live for myself.Â
That night, a little after ten, Cormac came home with Kellan.Â
They called my name.Â
No one answered.Â
Kellan ran into the bedroom.Â
The closet was half empty.Â
He panicked immediately.Â
Cormac walked to the dining table and opened the documents I had left behind.Â
His face slowly drained of color.Â
Divorce. And primary custody of Kellan.Â
He called me at once.Â
My phone was off.Â
Kellan clutched the custc dy papers with both hands, sobbing so hard he could barely speak.Â
“Mom… doesn’t want us anymore?”Â
