My Fiance Said I Was the Homewrecker Between Him and My BFF? Screw Them Bo… Chapter 06

Preston booked the next flight out and got to the airport

Phoebe appeared out of nowhere before security and grabbed his hand

Preston, I haven’t been sleeping. If you’re not here and

something happens to the baby, then what?”

I know Serena. She’s sulking, and she’s waiting for you to come running.”

His sister backed her up

Right? She’s making things up to get your sympathy, and you actually fell for it.”

Phoebe can’t be alone right now. What’s she supposed to do if you leave?”

Phoebe matters more to you and you know it. If Serena

wants to disappear, let her. It clears the way.”

Preston’s face went hard, and he threw his sister’s hand off him

What is wrong with you! Serena is my girlfriend.”

Phoebe startled and dropped onto the floor

Her face twisted, and she held her stomach, Preston, it hurts”

Preston hesitated for one second, then heard his flight called

turned, and went

He got a local number when he landed and called me

His voice was raw on the phone

I went to the hospital and asked. The nurse said you were

aloneshe said you stood there all night.”

Serena, this is on me. I never thought your mom would hear

any of that. I didn’t mean for it to happen.”

I thought you made up the surgery to get to me. You’ve never

been able to accept that Phoebe is pregnant, and I thought

you were only trying to get me to come.”

I cut him off, flat. Are you finished? I’m hanging up.”

Don’t hang up!”

His voice sped up. I came here for you. Give me your address

and we can talk this through”

I hung up and blocked the new number, too

I was going through my mother’s things when I came across photo

It was taken right after her first surgery

Preston’s eyes were red in it, and he was making a promise

You don’t have to worry. I’ll take care of Serena for the rest of

my life, and I’ll never let anything hurt her.”

My mother had her hands over both of ours, and she was smiling

I trust Preston. You two have been together so long. If I get to

see you married, I can rest easy.”

I looked at the photo for a long time, and the tears came

anyway, spreading into a small dark spot on the paper

Back then, the honesty in his eyes fooled every one of us

Maybe it wasn’t a lie. Maybe he meant it

But it was also true that he stopped meaning it

I was the fool who thought a promise stayed good forever

because somebody said it out loud
