Loving You Was My Poision Chapter 05
Isa’s POVÂ
Vito’s phone slipped from his hand and clattered toÂ
the floor. He stood frozen like a statue.Â
“Don? Don, you there?” Marco’s urgent voice crackled from the speaker.Â
Vito jerked back to reality, lunging for the phone. His voice shook. “Say that again.”Â
“Russo family lawyer just showed up. Says Mrs. CastroÂ
hired him. He’s serving divorce papers.”Â
All color drained from Vito’s face.Â
He practically bolted from the boutique. Elena called after him–he didn’t even glance back. His men scrambled to keep up.Â
“Find out what flight she’s on!” he barked into theÂ
phone. “RIGHT NOW!”Â
Ten minutes later, he had the information.Â
Racing toward JFK, Vito dialed my number again andÂ
again. Every call went straight to disconnected. HistÂ
knuckles went bone–white around the phone,Â
something unhinged flickering behind his eyes.Â
“Drive FASTER!” he roared.Â
The driver floored it.Â
I sat in the departure lounge, boarding pass in hand.Â
Thirty minutes to go.Â
My phone kept buzzing in my purse. I knew exactlyÂ
who it was. Didn’t look. Just sat there, watchingÂ
planes taxi across the tarmac.Â
Three years. I’d fantasized about this moment countless times.Â
Always thought it would hurt. Thought I’d hesitate, second–guess, maybe even turn back.Â
But now? Nothing. Just calm.Â
“Isa.”Â
That voice cut through everything.Â
I looked up. Vito stood before me, at least ten suited guards fanned out behind him. Sweat glistened on his forehead–he’d been running.Â
Standing.Â
Standing perfectly straight on those long, strong legs,Â
I stared at them and felt my mouth twist into something cold.Â
“Your legs work just fine.” My voice was eerily flat. ” Miracle recovery.”Â
Vito froze. Understanding dawned. Color flooded his face. “Isa, let me explain-”Â
“Explain what?” I rose to my feet. “That they justÂ
magically healed? Or were you planning some big reveal?”Â
People around us were staring now.Â
Vito sucked in a breath, visibly trying to stay inÂ
control. “Isa, just listen to me-”Â
“Drop the act, Vito.” I cut him off. “You played your part perfectly. Fooled me for three solid years.”Â
His face went sheet–white. “When… when did you figure it out?”Â
“The day I lost our baby.” Each word came out precise as a scalpel. “Outside the hospital room. I heard everyÂ
word you said to Marco.”Â
“Three years of lies, Vito. Three years.”Â
His whole body began to tremble.Â
“Okay, I screwed up.” His voice came out raw. “But Isa,Â
I want to make this right. I want US to work. The thing with Elena-”Â
“Elena’s alive, isn’t she?” My laugh was sharp and bitter.Â
Vito went silent.Â
“And pregnant.” I continued. “So what’s the plan here? I play mommy to her kid?”Â
“That’s NOT my child!” Vito’s voice cracked withÂ
urgency. “It’s Joe’s! I just thought… I could use that baby to replace what you lost-”Â
I actually laughed out loud.Â
“Replace?” The contempt in my voice could have stripped paint. “You think you can replace OUR baby-Â
the one YOU murdered–with some other woman’sÂ
child? With another man’s baby?”Â
“Vito, do you really think I’m that pathetic?”Â
His throat worked. Something raw flashed through his eyes.Â
“You know everything now, don’t you?” His tone suddenly went cold. “Fine. Yes, I hated you. Hated you for three years for stopping me, for making me lose Elena.”Â
“But I’m over it now. Elena’s moved on. I need toÂ
move on too. Isa, we can start fresh-”Â
“And if I’d never found out?” I interrupted.Â
Vito went rigid.Â
“If I’d just kept believing your lies like the fool you took me for.” My voice stayed soft, each word a knife.” What then? You’d have made me raise Elena’s baby?Â
Or just kept torturing me until I finally died?”Â
Vito’s mouth opened. Nothing came out.Â
That silence said everything.Â
“Vito.” I took a slow breath. “I don’t love you anymore.”Â
The words struck him like a physical blow.Â
His expression shattered. He lunged forward,Â
reaching for me desperately. “No–no, you CAN’T–Isa, you can’t stop loving me, we promised FOREVER-”Â
I stepped back, putting space between us.Â
“That was MY promise.” I met his eyes. “Not yours.”Â
“Sign the papers, Vito. Consider it my last act of mercy.”Â
“NO!” The word exploded from him, something wild and dangerous flashing in his eyes. “I will NEVER signÂ
NEVER!”Â
“Isa, you belong to ME! You’ll ALWAYS belong to me!”Â
He snapped his fingers. Guards surged forward.Â
At that exact moment, a wave of black–suited men poured in from the opposite end of the terminal,Â
The man at their head wore an impeccable black suit,Â
tall and commanding, radiating authority.Â
“Castro.” His voice was pure ice. “Get your filthyÂ
hands off my sister.”Â
Vito spun around. Recognition hit. He went absolutely still.Â
“Russo…” He stared at me in utter disbelief. “Your… sister?”Â
Luca walked to my side, lips curling into a cold smile. ” Surprise. Isa’s full name? Isabella Russo.”Â
“Only daughter of the Russo family. Sole heir. Named specifically in our parents‘ will.”Â
Vito gaped at me like I’d become a stranger.Â
“Three years ago,” Luca’s voice dropped several degrees, “she went against the entire family. Hid who she was. Married you anyway. Every single one of us told her you weren’t worthy of her. Know what she said?”Â
He paused. “She said she loved you.”Â
“This is how you repay that love?”Â
Around us, Vito’s guards were being efficientlyÂ
disarmed and restrained by Russo men.Â
“Come on.” Luca’s arm went around my shoulders.Â
Let’s go home.”Â
I nodded. Didn’t spare Vito another glance.Â
“ISA!” His voice cracked, raw with desperation. “ISA!Â
You can’t walk away! You’re MINE!”Â
“DO YOU HEAR ME?! YOU’LL ALWAYS BE MINE!”Â
Luca looked back, expression carved from stone. “You‘Â
ve got 24 hours to sign those papers, Castro.”Â
“Otherwise, every operation you run in New York–I’ll burn them down. One. By. One.”Â
He guided me away. We didn’t look back.Â
Behind us, Vito’s anguished screams slowly faded,Â
I closed my eyes.Â
Finally. It was over.Â
