I Was His Bet, I Become Their Surprise Chapter 06
Three syllables, and the entire room froze.
“What?”
“Sabrina? The girl from the group chat…”
“Are you serious?”
In the photo, my neck disappeared into my body, and my PE
uniform looked ready to split.
He pulled up my high school photo on his phone and held it
next to my face, looking back and forth.
In the photo, my neck disappeared into my body, and my
uniform looked ready to split.
The girl in front of him had visible collarbones and a waist
that didn’t look real.
He swallowed.
“Is this… really the same person?”
No one answered him.
Everyone in the room was doing the same thing.
Phone. Me. Phone. Me.
A girl in the corner spoke quietly.
“Her eyes and nose really are exactly the same.”
“Did she pull off some crazy glow–up?“.
Someone else finished for her.
“Did she activate some kind of cheat code?”
The one who’d suggested the forklift discovered a sudden
fascination with the ceiling.
The guy who’d made the pig joke hid behind his drink.
The one who’d suggested the moving truck discovered a
sudden fascination with the ceiling.
The cake was still right there. [Welcome, 220–pound
girlfriend] in red frosting, sitting on the table to my right.
Someone lunged for it, trying to move it.
But he fumbled it. The cake spun on the table and the red
letters ended up pointing straight at me.
The silence was suffocating.
“We were just trying to make the mixer more entertaining.”
“Well… it was just a joke.”
“We were just trying to make the party more entertaining.”
I looked at him without speaking.
If I were still 220 pounds, they wouldn’t have thought the
cake was too mean. They would’ve thought it wasn’t mean enough.
They were only embarrassed because I’d gotten thin.
Tristan was the last person to recover.
He couldn’t stop staring. His mouth opened and closed twice
before he managed my name.
“Sabrina?”
I met his eyes.
My voice did it. That’s when it hit him.
He took a step toward me.
“Is it really you?”
“When did you lose weight? Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
There was even a hint of accusation in his voice.
Like I’d hidden it on purpose just to humiliate him.
I didn’t answer.
The moment he posted my photo and let a hundred people
tear me apart, we’d run out of things to say.
The murmuring around us kept building.
*So she really is Tristan’s online girlfriend?”
“Wait, he bet a girl like her?”
“If he’d known she looked like this, you think he would’ve
pulled any of this?”
“No chance. He’s probably dying inside right now.”
Every word reached Tristan’s ears.
His face darkened, but his eyes on me only got hungrier.
Sienna noticed.
She leaned into Tristan, smile fixed in place.
“I mean, Sabrina looks completely different. No wonder
nobody recognized her.”
“And Tristan wasn’t trying to be mean. It was all just jokes
between friends. No hard feelings, right?”
One sentence, and she’d waved off everything they’d done to me.
The people who’d been roasting me grabbed onto that like a lifeline.
“Yeah, it was just a joke.”
“We’re all classmates now. No reason to make it weird.”
“Come on, Sabrina. You’re gorgeous. You’re not actually mad,
are you?”
I looked around the room, and something about the whole
scene almost made me laugh.
If I were still 220 pounds, nobody in this room would be apologizing.
“We still have those couple’s challenges, don’t we?”
I didn’t respond. I turned and walked to Nolan.
“We still have those couple challenges, don’t we?”
The room held its breath.
Tristan’s expression changed instantly.
Nolan looked down at me.
“You sure?”
I nodded.
“A bet’s a bet.”
At his side, Tristan’s hand curled into a fist.
