White rose petals scattered across the floor, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still.
The smile faded from Graham’s face, leaving only embarrassment.
“Audrey, do you really hate me that much now?”
“Every day I spent looking for you was unbearable. It felt
like all the drive had suddenly gone out of my life.”
“That’s why I had to find you and bring you home.”
I kept wrapping the bouquet in my hands without looking at him.
“I already told you I’m not going back with you.”
“You live your life, and I’ll live mine. We stay out of each
other’s way.”
“Audrey!” Graham finally snapped and seized my wrist,
“Then come home with me. You promised you would marry me.”
I struggled free and frowned at him.
“Graham, when did you become this childish?”
“Do you not understand what breaking up means? I finally
got my life back, and you still refuse to leave me alone.”
“Just let me go.”
My words seemed to sear him. His hand froze in midair.
“Audrey, please don’t say that.”
“I know I blamed you for something you didn’t do. I know
Madeline framed you and cost you your law license. Please forgive me.”
“I promise it will never happen again. Okay?”
With a few casual words, he thought he could make up for everything I had lost.
I scoffed.
“I don’t care who you choose to be with.”
“I’m done with my best friend, and I’m done with my boyfriend too.”
Graham stood there, completely stunned.
As more customers entered the shop, they gradually
pushed him aside until he was left standing by the door.
I ignored him and focused on my work.
By evening, the flower shop had closed.
I finished cleaning up and was about to lock the door
when Graham walked in carrying dinner.
“You must be hungry.”
“I brought you your favorite chicken pot pie. Eat it while
it’s still hot.”
He acted as though nothing had happened.
But I knew the man standing in front of me had changed a
long time ago.
I did not take the food. Instead, I gave him one final warning.
“Leave now, or I’m calling the police.”
The moment I finished speaking, my phone rang.
It was Madeline.
“Audrey, since you’ve decided to break up with Graham,
make it completely clear to him.”
“That’s the only way he can move on, forget you, and
finally realize that I’m the one who has stayed by his side.”
I gripped the phone so tightly that my fingertips turned white.
Even now, I could not accept that my best friend had
become this kind of person.
My voice remained calm.
“I’ve already made myself perfectly clear. Whatever
happens between the two of you has nothing to do with
me.”
As soon as I finished, Graham snatched the phone from
my hand.
“Madeline, I’m the one who can’t forget her. None of this is
her fault!”
“Haven’t you hurt her enough? If you ever come after her again, don’t say I didn’t warn you!”
There was a brief silence on the other end before Madeline
spoke in a choked voice.
“You went to find her?”
“Graham, I’m the one who’s right for you. She isn’t!”
Graham scoffed.
“A vicious woman like you is the one who doesn’t deserve me.”
He ended the call and blocked Madeline’s number on my phone.
“Audrey, you don’t have to deal with her anymore. She’s
unemployed now, and no law firm will hire her.”
“Come back to my firm. You can have any position you want-” .
“Graham,” I cut in, “there’s no going back for us.”
With that, I walked out into the night without looking back.
Graham remained where he was, motionless as a statue, watching me disappear.
A light drizzle began to fall on my way home, shimmering beneath the streetlights.
I was no longer in a hurry. Instead, I stood in the misty rain and breathed in the fresh air.
I would no longer live for anyone else or follow in anyone’s footsteps.
From now on, I would move forward at my own pace and find a light that belonged entirely to me,
