Only then did Graham take a close look at Audrey’s resignation letter.
It was dated the day of the law school reunion dinner.
He had drunk too much that night. When he went into the
hallway to find her, he had vaguely heard her say, “Don’t tell him.”
Audrey had already decided to leave by then.
But why?
Was it because he had sent her on errands, or because
Madeline had taken her seat?
But those were perfectly ordinary things.
Graham forced himself to his feet and went to Madeline’s
office, only to hear her speaking with an employee inside.
“Ms. Pierce, the client is furious. They never imagined we
could lose a case this straightforward.”
“It really is strange. With your track record, this should
have been an easy win.”
Madeline scoffed.
“Ask them how much they want in compensation. I’ll cover
the loss.”
When she saw the employee’s confusion, she continued.
“I did it for everyone’s sake.”
“Audrey was hopeless: She only got into the firm because she was dating Mr. Sullivan, and she collected a paycheck just for handling errands and paperwork. Didn’t all of you
hate her too?”
“Now that she’s gone, things can finally go back to normal.”
The employee, who had always sided with Madeline,
nodded repeatedly,
“So that’s what happened! I could never stand her either.
She only got hired because she was dating the managing
partner. Talk about blatant favoritism.”
Her complaints came to an abrupt stop when she noticed
the figure standing in the doorway.
“Mr… Mr. Sullivan.”
Madeline shot to her feet, all the color draining from her face.
“Graham? Why are you here? Did you hear what we were just saying?”
“Yes. I heard you,” Graham replied, his voice icy,
He walked toward her one step at a time, his eyes
frighteningly dark.
“So you staged the whole thing yourself. Madeline, you
really are quite an actress.”
Madeline hurried to explain.
“I… I only did it for the good of the firm. A lot of people were unhappy with Audrey. As her best friend, I didn’t. want everyone criticizing her behind her back.”
The employee beside her could only nod along.
Graham scoffed at her self–righteous excuse.
“Really? Did everyone hate her, or did you?”
He immediately summoned the entire staff.
Janet was the first to step forward.
“We all liked Audrey. She was diligent and dependable, and
she took care of everything around the firm, big or small.”
“She’s only been gone a few days, and the place is already a mess.”
Once Janet spoke up, the others began agreeing with her.
“She’s right. Everything ran much more smoothly when
Audrey was here. I got so much more work done.”
Madeline’s expression darkened as she listened.
Graham stared at her in disbelief.
“Wasn’t she your best friend? How could you frame her like that?”
Madeline clenched her fists, resentment filling her eyes.
“Do you want me to admit I was jealous of her?”
“I worked for years to finally stand beside you, and after all
that, she was still the one you planned to marry.”
“She’s stupid, spoiled, and only good for fetching coffee
and doing clerical work. What could you possibly see in her?”
Graham froze for a moment, then looked at her in disappointment.
“After everything we did for you, this is how you repay us?
You’re unbelievable.”
He called Janet over and gave her an order.
“Terminate her immediately.”
“There is no place for someone like her at this firm.”
Madeline’s eyes widened. She clutched Graham’s arm tightly.
“You can’t do this to me, Graham Sullivan! You obviously have feelings for me!”
Graham shoved her away and stormed out.
He found his assistant immediately.
“Book me the first available flight.”
