I Ran Errands for My Boyfriend Then Decided to Break Up Chapter 04
The day before I left, I brought my resignation letter to Graham’s office.
A crowd of employees had already gathered outside. The
moment they saw me, they looked me up and down with open contempt.
I pushed through the crowd and found Madeline sitting
inside the office, wiping away her tears.
Graham walked straight toward me, disappointment
written all over his face.
“How much do you have to hate Madeline to set her up
like this?”
I stared at him in confusion.
“What are you talking about?”
Madeline raised a document high enough for everyone to
see. She looked at me with tears spilling down her cheeks.
“Every piece of evidence I worked so hard to gather had
been falsified overnight. We lost the case because of it,
and I could even be disbarred.”
No one questioned her story.
Since handling the case files was part of my regular job, I
was in the best position to tamper with them.
“I didn’t do it!”
I looked Graham directly in the eyes.
“You believe her too?”
He stared back at me with disgust and disappointment.
“I was wondering why you were so quiet last night. No
crying, no arguing. So this is what you were planning?”
“You know how hard Madeline worked to become an
attorney. Are you trying to destroy her career and
reputation?”
I understood immediately.
Rather than risk Madeline losing her law license, he was
willing to pin everything on me,
Even though I had done nothing.
It felt as though a hole had opened in my chest, letting an
icy draft rush straight through me.
Graham personally assembled the case against me,
accusing me of tampering with evidence, causing the
client enormous financial losses, and maliciously trying to
destroy Madeline’s professional reputation.
Any one of those accusations could have ruined me.
By the time the court case and the disciplinary process
were over, I had been disbarred. The law license I had
spent three years fighting to earn was gone.
No law firm would ever hire me again.
I walked out of the courthouse in a daze while Madeline’s
Instagram filled with theerful updates.
To lift her spirits, Graham took her on a weeklong trip overseas.
Every place they geotagged was somewhere Graham and I
had once made memories together.
When I returned to the firm to pack my belongings,
everyone watched me with contempt.
Only Madeline smiled at me with the air of a victor.
Graham came over holding my termination letter, a trace
of guilt in his eyes.
“Maybe it’s better if you don’t work at the firm anymore.
You were pushing yourself too hard anyway.”
“If you really want another job, a friend of mine is hiring a receptionist. You have the right look for it. I can put in a
good word for you.”
He stepped forward as if he intended to help me carry my things.
I pushed him away, lifted the box in my arms, and walked
out of the firm without looking back.
Once I was in the cab to the airport, I rejected every call
he made.
Just before the plane took off, I sent him one final message.
Me: [Graham, we’re done.]
Then I blocked him everywhere.
That evening, Graham reserved a table for two at Audrey’s
favorite French restaurant.
He was about to call her when a message appeared on his phone.
The moment he read it, he swayed, and the phone slipped from his hand.
