I Built His Empire, He Gave Her The Ring Chapter 04
The day of the board meeting, I walked in last.
Every chair was filled.
Grant spoke first.
“As most of you know, Vanessa and I are married,” he
said. “She’s carrying my child.”
He told the room I’d been exhibiting erratic behavior.
That I’d created a toxic work environment, and
violated company policy by engaging in unauthorized
talks with a competitor. That my behavior had
compromised the organization.
He didn’t look at me once.
Every year beside him, every late night I’d poured into this company, none of it showed on his face.
Then the others piled on.
Warren pulled up security footage–edited, of course
-cut right at the moment when I told Vanessa to get out of my office.
Someone else had printed out the anonymous post,
waving it like evidence. “The team’s been walking on eggshells around her for months.”
Curtis leaned back with his peacemaker facade on and sighed.
“Nobody’s denying what you’ve done for this
company, Tessa. We want to protect your dignity here.
Sign today, and you walk away with your vested equity and your reputation intact.”
I sat there and almost wanted to applaud.
Burn the house down, then hand me the ashes and call it generosity.
They’d blocked every exit and left me only one door-
the one they wanted me to walk through.
Grant slid his platinum pen toward me.
“Tessa, sign it.”
I looked at the pen without moving.
Vanessa’s voice came from the end of the table, soft as silk.
“This hasn’t been easy for any of us, Tessa. Please…
don’t make this harder on him than it already is.”
I looked at her.
“And who exactly do you think you are?”
The color drained from her face. She bit her lip, her
eyes filling with tears.
Grant’s whole face changed.
“Tessa. Not here. Don’t cause a scene.”
I picked up the agreement.
The whole room watched my hands.
I ripped it straight down the middle.
It wasn’t loud.
But every voice in that room died.
Grant shoved back from the table and stood. His face hardened into stone.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
