I Built His Empire, He Gave Her The Ring Chapter 02
The next morning, I walked into the office like nothing had happened.
The receptionist spotted me and froze. Her smile came half a second too late.
“Good morning, Ms. Hartwell.”
I nodded and headed straight for the conference room.
Every seat was taken.
“Grant sat at the head of the table, looking exactly the
way he always did. Like last night hadn’t happened.
Like he hadn’t just humiliated me in front of everyone.
Vanessa was already seated.
Grant opened with the post–IPO roadmap. I sat there and said nothing.
Then Vanessa started passing out thick, glossy restructuring packets.
“As part of the company’s internal restructuring, I’ll
be taking over the bulk of Ms. Hartwell’s day–to–day
responsibilities,” she announced, her voice sweet but carrying across the room.
The copies made their way around the table.
Two pages in, I got the picture.
They’d dressed it up as a corporate realignment to
keep it clean. What it really was? A public gutting of everything I controlled.
I looked up. “Who signed off on this?”
Grant didn’t even blink. “I did. Warren Keller and the
rest of the board agree. You haven’t been yourself lately. Take a paid sabbatical. Vanessa is better suited to handle things internally.”
He said it the way you’d announce a schedule change.
But he knew, better than anyone, that a title without teeth meant nothing to me. I hadn’t fought this hard just to watch from the sidelines.
And now he wanted me to step aside while his pregnant
wife took over what I built.
The meeting broke. I walked back to my office and tapped my badge. The panel flashed red. I tried again.
Red.
My assistant wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“They updated the system permissions this morning. They revoked your admin privileges. You only have view–only access to the core databases now. You can’t… you can’t edit anything.”
I stared at the locked door and almost laughed.
Yesterday they’d humiliated me in front of everyone. Today they were already cutting me off.
They weren’t even pretending anymore.
When the door finally opened, I stood in the doorway. I didn’t go in.
The office didn’t look like mine anymore.
A pregnancy pillow on the couch. Prenatal vitamins on
my desk. Pink and white flowers by the window.
Vanessa was sitting in my chair, the one I used for client meetings. She looked up and smiled.
“Grant said the lounge by his office was too cramped for me, with me being pregnant and all. He’s going to combine your office with the room next door, and I’ll be working out of here.”
She rested a hand on her belly.
“You’re okay with that, right?”
I set my bag down and looked at her.
“Leave.”
She froze.
“What?”
“I said get out of my office.”
The color left her face. Her hand went to her belly, and she stumbled back a step, eyes already welling up with fake tears.
The glass door swung open before I could blink.
Grant was already across the room, putting himself between us.
“Tessa, what the hell is wrong with you? She’s pregnant.”
I just stood there. I didn’t have it in me to explain.
I’d worked myself sick closing deals, and he told me I could handle it.
I’d collapsed with a fever after flying through three
countries back–to–back, and he said the company couldn’t survive without me.
But I told his wife to leave my office, and suddenly I was the lunatic.
So that was the difference. That was the privilege of
being the woman he actually loved.
His eyes went flat.
“Go home. Get some rest. The board meets in three
days to finalize the restructure.”
I smiled.
“You moved fast.”
His jaw tightened. “Don’t make this uglier than it has to be.”
I didn’t say another word. I just left.
The second I stepped off the private elevator into our
shared penthouse, I stopped.
Someone had rearranged the living room.
Prenatal reports spread across the dining table.
Another pregnancy pillow on the couch.
The framed engagement portrait on the wall was gone.
Something else hung in its place.
I stood in the middle of my own living room, and I couldn’t breathe.
This hadn’t been my home in a long time. I just hadn’t known it.
The heavy oak door opened behind me.
Grant walked in like he was mentioning the weather.
Vanessa’s going to be staying here for a while.”
I turned and looked at him.
I couldn’t even find the anger. It was just… gone.
He was so sure of himself.
Sure I wouldn’t walk away from the company. Sure I
couldn’t abandon the empire I’d built. Sure I’d swallow all of it eventually.
Sure I couldn’t leave him.
That’s why he thought he could do this.
But he forgot something.
Push a woman far enough, and the thing she was most
afraid to lose became the easiest thing to burn to the ground.
