His Broken Toy came Back to Destroy Him Chapter 05
Hadley’s POVÂ
Preston’s hand jerks away like he’s been burned. I slide down the wall, clutching my throat, coughing hard.Â
Air floods back into my lungs.Â
Preston stares down at me. For the first time, I see something crack through that arrogance. Panic.Â
“What did you just say?” His voice shakes.Â
I push myself off the wall, straighten up. I smile. Cold. “Harbor Heights. Your family swapped out the good steel for cheap shit to save money. You know damn well what I’m talking about.”Â
Preston stares at me hard. Like he’s trying to figure out who the hell I really am.Â
“How the hell do you know that? Where’d you get that information?” He moves forward again.Â
I sidestep him. “You really thought nobody would find out? That the Blackwell name would cover this up forever?”Â
Last time around, that project collapsed two years later. Killed workers. And the Blackwells threw an innocent project manager under the bus to save themselves. That project manager was Cole’s father.Â
Not this time. I won’t let it happen again.Â
The past two weeks, while I played his obedient little pet, I hid a camera in his study. Photographed the encrypted files on his computer. Those files are proof. Hard evidence of everything Blackwell Group did.Â
“You threatening me, Hadley?” Preston’s eyes flash with something deadly. “You think you’re walking out of here?”Â
I meet his gaze without flinching. “If I’m not back inÂ
my dorm by midnight, or if my phone goes dark, an email goes out. Inspection reports, financial records, internal meeting recordings. Straight to thirty major news outlets, federal regulators, every platform I could find.”Â
I let each word sink in. “You think this is a game? I want your family to pay. For everything.”Â
Preston freezes. Stares at me like he’s never seen me before.Â
He finally gets it. The prey set the trap before he ever showed up.Â
Preston takes a breath. Forces himself calm. “Name your price. How much? Ten million? Fifty? Hand over what you’ve got and we’re done.”Â
Still thinks he can buy his way out of this.Â
I almost laugh. “You think I need your money?”Â
“Then what the hell do you want?!” He’s losing it now.Â
Really losing it.Â
“I want to watch you burn.”Â
I turn, pull the door open, and walk out.Â
The night air cuts through the stale smell of smoke and alcohol clinging to my clothes. I check the time.Â
11:50 PM.Â
I hit send.Â
By morning, the internet explodes.Â
#BlackwellGroupScandalÂ
#HarborHeightsCollapseÂ
#CorporateCorruptionÂ
The hashtags spread like wildfire. Every social platform lights up. The evidence I sent out is detailed,Â
airtight. The Blackwell PR team doesn’t stand a chance.Â
And I didn’t stop there. I released everything showing how the Hartleys and Blackwells worked together.Â
Bribes, kickbacks, the whole operation.Â
By noon, Whitmore’s campus is buzzing.Â
“Did you hear? The Blackwells are done. FBI’s involved.”Â
“Blair’s dad got taken in for questioning. Major financial crimes, they’re saying.”Â
“They acted so untouchable. Turns out they were dirty this whole time.”Â
I sit in a corner of the library, watching stock tickers on my phone. Blackwell and Hartley shares tank at opening. Straight into freefall.Â
And I’m just getting started.Â
Afternoon. Cole calls.Â
“Hadley, where are you?” He sounds rushed.Â
“Library.”Â
“Stay there. I’m coming. Preston’s lost it. He’s looking for you.”Â
I hang up. Close the book in front of me.Â
I don’t hide. I stand, walk out of the library.Â
In the plaza outside, I spot Preston.Â
He’s not the polished heir anymore. Same wrinkled shirt from last night. Eyes bloodshot. Hair a mess. Like a cornered animal.Â
He sees me. Charges.Â
“Hadley! You bitch! You ruined everything! My family’s done because of you!“
Students scatter, yelling.Â
Preston reaches me. Raises his hand to strike.Â
I don’t move. Just watch him.Â
Someone catches his fist mid–swing.Â
Cole’s suddenly there. Right between us. He shoves Preston back hard.Â
“You done pretending you’re untouchable?” Cole’s voice cuts cold. “Cops are on their way.”Â
Preston stumbles. Stares at me. Then he starts laughing. The sound makes my skin crawl.Â
