He Welcomed Her Pup While Mine Was Cremated Chapter 04
POV: Maris Alden
Brennan coaxed, “Okay, okay. I’ll be careful. Don’t worry, I won’t hurt our pup.”
The sounds of them screwing filled the whole wolf fortress.
They were tangled together on my mate bed. I couldn’t go in to
pack my things.
I stood frozen in place. The wet sounds of their kissing and the lewd
moans of their mating hit me like a blade to the chest.
The mate bond inside me wrenched violently, as if tearing my wolf
in two. The pain turned my face pale.
I don’t know how long it was before the two of them finally came out.
Keira wore a smug expression. “Oh my, Maris. When did you get back?”
“It’s all Brennan’s fault. He said you and Elara weren’t home and he
just had to have me here. Sorry about that.”
Brennan stepped out from behind her and wrapped an arm around her waist.
“Why are you telling her that? What right does she have to ask
about us? Let’s go. Weren’t you hungry?”
The whole time, Brennan’s eyes never landed on me.
I stepped aside to make way for them.
As he passed, Brennan finally noticed the urn in my arms. “What is
that dusty thing? Why are you holding it like that? It looks disgusting.”
Without waiting for an answer, he walked off with Keira.
I looked down and gently wiped the surface of the urn. “It’s okay. Daddy wasn’t talking about you.”
After carefully placing the urn on the cabinet, I packed up Elara’s
things one by one. Clothes, toys, her drawing board.
On the board was a drawing Elara hadn’t finished.
With trembling hands, I took the canvas down.
At the top, in wobbly letters, it read: [Daddy, Mommy, and me under
the full moon.]
Below that, it said: [Daddy loves Mommy.]
I finally broke, clutching the canvas and sobbing out loud.
All these years, no matter how things were between Brennan and
me, I never spoke a bad word about him in front of Elara.
But she knew her daddy didn’t love her mommy. She just wished her daddy loved her mommy.
By nightfall, Elara’s things filled several boxes.
I’d booked a cross–state moving company in advance. The servants helped load the boxes into the truck.
“Ms. Alden, everything’s packed. Take Elara and go. Leave this sad
place behind and never look back. Go start your new life.”
One of them, a kind old woman named Mrs. Gwen, hugged me and kissed my cheek, her eyes full of compassion.
I nodded, handed her the bond dissolution papers I’d already signed, told her to give them to Brennan, then turned and got into the car.
On the road, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Keira.
[Maris, Brennan won’t be home for a few days again. He’s dragging
me off to Maui for a vacation. Sorry about that 🙂]
Attached was a photo: her and Brennan, shameless in bed.
But now, seeing messages like this, my wolf and I felt nothing. I almost wanted to laugh.
I snapped my PackPhone SIM, cut the PackChat line, wiped my
scent trace, and watched the pack house shrink in the rearview mirror. A sudden lightness filled my heart.
At the same time, Northbridge International Terminal.
Garrick and Beatrice stopped Brennan and Keira as they were about to go through security.
Brennan’s face immediately darkened.
“Is Maris out of her mind? She won’t say a word to my face, but she sends you to hunt me down at the airport? That’s just sick.”
Before he could finish, Garrick slapped him hard across the face.
“You animal! You killed your own pup and still dare to take your mistress on vacation?”
Brennan stumbled, nearly losing his footing.
“Dad, what… what did you say?”
