He Never Loved Me, Until I Left Chapter 05

After finishing everything, Richard finally had time to open the email from HR.

He clicked on the email, and Claire’s resignation. approval letter lay quietly in the attachment.

Richard stared intently at the red “Resigned” words on the screen, his mind blank for half a minute.

He frantically searched his desk, and sure enough, a document that shouldn’t have been ignored lay there quietly–a divorce agreement.

Turning to the last page, in the first party’s position, was the name he had signed three days ago without even looking at it, to comfort Chloe who was complaining about a leaky apartment. And the second party’s name “Claire“—was signed so delicately, forcefully, and resolutely.

Richard, are you done…?” Chloe stood in the oorway, looking at him timidly.

Get out!” Richard roared, his eyes bloodshot, a sound he himself found unfamiliar.

Chloe ran away in fright, but he didn’t even glance at her.

Richard grabbed his car keys and sped out of the company like a madman, flooring the gas pedal all the way back to his apartment.

The moment he pushed open the door, he was met with suffocating silence. The neatly arranged women‘ s flats were gone from the entryway, and Leo’s sneakers were nowhere to be found in the shoe cabinet.

His hands trembled as he pushed open the master bedroom door; the walk–in closet was mostly empty.

He then opened Leo’s room; there were no paintbrushes, no storybooks, not even the “Best Little Actor” crown made of colored cardstock.

Only the hamster cage remained, abandoned forlornly in the corner of the balcony, like a giant mockery.

“Claire…” Richard’s voice sounded particularly pale in the empty room.

He pulled out his phone and frantically dialed a umber. “Sorry, the number you dialed is not in Service.”

WhatsApp, email, Instagram… he was completely and utterly blocked.

A massive wave of panic overwhelmed him. Trembling, he dialed Mr. Davis’s number in HR: Where’s Claire? Where did she go with the kids?!”

On the other end of the line, Mr. Davis replied, puzzled, “Richard, don’t you know? Claire said she’s going to Chicago to start a new life, and that she wants to find a more loving environment for Leo.”

In the background, he heard Mr. Davis’s son’s pleading voice: “Daddy, play with my blocks!”

These interactions between father and son shattered

Richard’s heart like a sharp knife.

He remembered Leo’s trembling shoulders when he casually gave Chloe his prize, which Leo cherished; he remembered Claire’s icy gaze when he brought home hamster that would have driven his son crazy.

Richard collapsed to his knees in the empty living room, covered his face, and let out a desperate sob in the deathly silence.

He personally drove his only loving wife and the child who bore his blood to their deaths.
