He Called Me Boring in French Chapter 07
Some Things Can Never Be Clean AgainÂ
Evelyn’s POVÂ
The courtroom is silent except for the rustling of papers. Spring sunlight streams through the tall windows. I sit at the plaintiff’s table in a simple navy suit. No jewelry. Nothing extra. Just me.Â
Across the aisle, Marcus looks like hell. His suit isÂ
wrinkled. Eyes bloodshot. Face unshaven. Nothing like the confident hedge fund CEO from six months ago.Â
His lawyer stands up. “Your Honor, the evidence is largely circumstantial. My client admits to maritalÂ
indiscretion, but the allegations of violence…”Â
The judge cuts him off. “Counsel, I’ve reviewed everything. Proceed, Ms. Steinberg.”Â
Gloria rises beside me. “Your Honor, we have medical records from the hospital. Ms. Sienna Brooks wasÂ
admitted six months ago with severe abdominal trauma. Resulted in miscarriage and emergency ysterectomy.”Â
She hands a document to the judge. Marcus’s fingers clench on the table. His knuckles go white.Â
IÂ keep my eyes forward.Â
“The records indicate blunt force trauma. Consistent with being kicked repeatedly,” Gloria continues. “Ms. Brooks was twelve weeks pregnant. The defendant’s violence resulted in permanent infertility.”Â
Marcus’s lawyer tries again. “There’s no proof my client…”Â
“Hospital security footage shows Mr. Kane entering with Ms. Brooks thirty minutes before the incident. His knuckles were bruised when he left.”Â
Marcus shoots to his feet. “That’s not… I didn’t mean…‘Â
The judge’s gavel comes down hard. “Mr. Kane, sit down.”Â
He drops back into his chair.Â
The judge flips through documents, then looks up. “I’ve seen enough. The marriage is dissolved effective immediately. Mrs. Kane is entitled to eight million dollars from the appreciation of her pre–marital investment portfolio. Mr. Kane will cover all legalÂ
fees.”Â
Lexhale slowly.Â
Seven years. It’s finally over.Â
“This court is adjourned.”Â
The gavel falls.Â
I walk out into spring sunlight. Rachel and Gloria flank me on the courthouse steps. I don’t move yet. Just stand there, breathing.Â
“Evelyn, wait.”Â
Marcus’s voice. Hoarse.Â
I stop but don’t turn around. Rachel moves to block him. I shake my head.Â
He stumbles up beside me, breathing hard. “Can we at least be friends? Start over? I know I fucked up, but…”Â
I turn to face him.Â
He looks like a stranger now. Nothing like the man who waited outside the library seven years ago.Â
“Marcus, you know what I learned in the Amazon? Some ecosystems, once poisoned, can never recover. The toxins seep into everything.”Â
Hope flickers in his eyes. Then dies.Â
You’re toxic waste. And I don’t do waste management anymore.”Â
His voice cracks. “I never meant to hurt you.“: almost laugh. “That’s the thing. You did hurt me. You just didn’t care enough to notice.”Â
“Evelyn, please…”Â
“Goodbye, Marcus. I hope you find whatever you’reÂ
looking for. Just don’t come looking for me.Â
I turn away. My heels click on stone. Each step steady.Â
Final.Â
I don’t look back.Â
Marcus stands frozen, hand half–raised, watching her walk away.Â
At the corner, James leans against an old Jeep. Two coffee cups in hand. He’s wearing a simple blue sweater and jeans.Â
When he sees me, he smiles.Â
That smile. Warm. Real.Â
How do you feel?” He hands me a coffee.Â
I take it, breathe deep. “Free. For the first time in seven years.”Â
“We have a flight to Costa Rica in three hours. The team is waiting.”Â
look at him. This man who waited seven years. No pressure. No demands.Â
And after Costa Rica?”Â
James smiles. “Wherever you want. Kenya? Iceland?Â
I’m flexible.”Â
I stand on my toes and kiss him. Soft. A promise.Â
“Thank you for waiting,” I whisper.Â
Chapter 7 Some Things Can Ne..Â
He touches my cheek. “I’d wait a lifetime for you.”Â
He opens the car door. I slide in. The engine starts. We pull into traffic.Â
Behind us, Marcus still stands on the steps, watching us disappear.Â
Marcus’s phone buzzes. He pulls it out. The company CFO.Â
“Marcus, the board met this morning. They want your resignation. The scandal is killing investor confidence. $tock dropped another fifteen percent.”Â
Marcus hangs up.Â
The phone rings again. His father.Â
“You’ve embarrassed the family name.” Mr. Kane Sr.’s voice is cold. “The trust fund is frozen. If you ever clean this up, maybe we’ll talk.”Â
“Marcus, I…”Â
The line goes dead.Â
Marcus leans against a pillar. His legs give out.Â
No. That’s wrong. His legs don’t give out anymore.Â
They don’t work at all.Â
Three weeks after the Amazon. He drank himself stupid and got behind the wheel. The car wrapped around a tree on the FDR Drive. He woke up in a hospital bed. Doctor’s face was professionally blank.Â
“T10 spinal cord injury, Mr. Kane. Permanent paralysisÂ
below the waist. You’ll never walk again.”Â
Never walk. Never fuck. Never have kids. The universe’s little joke. He destroyed Sienna’s ability to have children, so it took his.Â
He starts laughing. Hysterical.Â
This is what losing feels like. Not just losing her. Losing everything.Â
He slides down the pillar. His expensive suit gets dirty on the cold stone. He doesn’t care anymore.Â
One year later. Costa Rica.Â
Waves crash against white sand. I stand under a simple wooden arch in a white linen dress. My five–month pregnant belly shows. No diamonds. No luxury. Just twenty people I actually care about.Â
James holds my hands. Tears in his eyes. “Evelyn Hart ‘ve loved you for seven years. Waited for you. And I’d do it all over again.”Â
‘m crying too. “James Whitmore, you taught me what love really means. Not conquest. Not possession. Just being chosen.”Â
Rachel stands beside me, wiping her eyes. Dr. FosterÂ
sits in the front row, smiling.Â
“You may kiss the bride.”Â
James kisses me. The waves roll behind us. Sunset paints the sky gold.Â
Rachel hugs me tight, laughing through tears. “I’m so happy for you. This is what love should look like.”Â
I look at James. “This is what it feels like to be chosen.Â
Not conquered.”Â
My hand rests on my belly. A new life. A new beginning. Everything Marcus destroyed, rebuilt on my own terms.Â
The same evening. New York.Â
Marcus sits in a wheelchair, staring at a computerÂ
screen. Not the corner office anymore. Just a smallÂ
cubicle on the fifteenth floor.Â
On the screen, photos from Evelyn’s wedding.Â
Someone tagged him before the post went private. White dress. Pregnant. Radiant.Â
With James fucking Whitmore.Â
His phone buzzes. Sienna’s text. “Last chance. $5 million or I talk tomorrow.”Â
On his desk, company bankruptcy papers. Legal documents stripping his inheritance. Medical diagnosis. T10 spinal injury. Permanent paralysis below the waist. No recovery possible.Â
I had everything. The perfect wife. The successfulÂ
company. Respect.Â
And I threw it all away for what? A twenty–two-Â
year–old who’s blackmailing me now? The thrill of cheating?Â
He looks at Evelyn’s photo again. Her hand on her pregnant belly. James’s hand on her waist.Â
Evelyn was right. I loved conquering her. But I never learned how to love her.Â
And now I’ll spend the rest of my life knowing exactly what I lost.Â
This is my punishment. Not the wheelchair. Not the bankruptcy.Â
But knowing she’s happy without me. That she’s better off without me.Â
That I was the poison in her perfect life.Â
THE END
