Chapter 4
But none of those stares Made Me feel as ashamed as that slap from Cameron.
Even after a few seconds, My cheek was still burning.
It wasn’t just my face. It burned in my heart, too.
I staggered to my feet.
It felt like a hand was churning my stomach, the pain so intense my face went pale.
Willie hurried over just then.
He froze for a Moment when he saw how pale I looked, then patted my shoulder and spoke gently to Comfort Me.
“Did Sophia freak you out? Are you alright?” Willie’s words brought a pang of sadness to my heart.
The Man I’d loved for fifteen years, yet not even a single friend showed me any concern.
Before I could say anything, Cameron gave Willie a look like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
“Willie, your wife was hurt by someone and she’s lying in there, and you still have the nerve to worry about someone else?” Cameron snapped.
He was furious and utterly contemptuous of Willie. ‘How could he care about another man’s wife while his
own was in danger?‘ Cameron thought.
That was funny.
He was no different himself.
Willie frowned at Cameron’s words.
“Hurt My wife? What are you talking about?” Willie
said. “Sophia’s just pregnant, and she happened to eat
Some crab when things weren’t stable with the baby: that’s all.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the room went dead
silent.
Cameron’s gaze wavered, and he looked unsteady, as if he couldn’t decide whether to cry or laugh.
He opened and closed his mouth, but in the end, he couldn’t get a single word out.
“Katherine and Sophia are best friends. Why would Katherine ever do anything to hurt her?” Willie said.
Cameron’s face suddenly went pale.
He turned to me, my eyes swollen and red, and his gaze flashed with a jumble of emotions.
“Katherine, I…” he began.
He seemed even more tongue–tied than before.
Thankfully, the doctor came out and broke the awkward tension hanging between us.
“Family Members can go in now,” the doctor announced.
“She’s weak, and her pregnancy is still unstable. You need to watch her diet carefully. As her husband, you should really be more attentive,” the doctor said, looking right at Willie.
After saying that, the doctor turned and left.
This time, Cameron didn’t rush ahead. He hung back, bringing up the rear.
Willie and I walked into the room together.
Seeing Sophia sitting on the hospital bed, wearing a goofy smile, I let out a sigh and said, “You’re pregnant. and you never bothered to tell Me?”
Sophia was just like the book described her.
She was kind, generous, cute, and a bit silly. I just couldn’t bring myself to dislike her, let alone hate her.
Besides, the one at fault was Cameron, not her.
“Oh, you know, the doctor said the first three months are always a bit unstable, so I thought I’d wait until things settled down before telling you,” Sophia said.
She gave me her best puppy–dog eyes, acting all adorable and sweet.
Suddenly, she noticed my swollen, red eyes.
In the next second, her playful look disappeared, and guilt clouded her face.
“I’m sorry, Katherine. I promise I won’t do it again,” she Mumbled.
She hung her head, looking even more miserable.
The sunlight spilled across her delicate profile, Making her look heartbreakingly sweet.
If Cameron saw her like this, he’d probably say I was
the villain here.
He would think I was just messing with Sophia, Making her feel all upset.
Those thoughts just wouldn’t stop, no matter what I did.
My hands balled into shaky fists at my sides.
“Katherine was really scared this time, and now people are even blaming her for what happened to you,” Willie said.
Willie suddenly chimed in, catching everyone off guard.
Sophia and Willie really were two of a kind. She immediately picked up on what he was getting at.
Her eyes snapped over to Cameron.
Willie gently led me out of the room.
That left just the two of them inside.
I had no clue what the two of them were saying in that hospital room.
The truth was out in the open now, and my heart, which used to be so calm, was suddenly all over the place.
Willie noticed how restless I was and patted my shoulder.
“Did you get into it with Cameron?” he asked.
He was asking, but the confidence in his tone left me speechless.
Willie asked, “Did you and Cameron have a fight?”
“No,” I replied quietly, shaking my head.
“If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s okay,” Willie said. “As your friend, I just hate seeing you upset.”
He propped himself against the railing, staring out the window.
“You’re Sophia’s best friend and mine, too,” he said. gently. “All we want is for you to be happy.”
I wanted to cry again.
But I bit my lip hard, trying not to let myself break down.
In this secret love triangle that nobody ever talked about, I ended up being the loser.
Half an hour later, Cameron walked out of the hospital room, his eyes red from crying.
“Honey…” Cameron said softly, reaching out toward Me.
But I instinctively pulled away.
We both froze, surprised.
Willie, being thoughtful, quietly stepped out and left
the two of us alone.
