On the way back, Kael kept glancing at me.
It wasn’t until we were in the car that he finally said, his voice low,
“Grace, you’ve changed a lot.”
I was scrolling through a jewelry auction on my phone and didn’t look up.
“I love you. Of course I’m willing to change for you.”
“It’s my birthday today, and I want this moon–diamond necklace.
Will you buy it for me?”
I held the phone out to him.
I had picked the most expensive one, and the one most likely to
hold its value.
Kael was Ashford Group’s sole heir and Blackwood Pack’s young
Alpha. He had never been stingy, but romance had never been his
strong suit either.
Almost every expensive gift he gave me came after something
involving Tessa had left him feeling guilty.
I used to think the gifts were his way of making it up to me.
Now I knew they were simply the price he paid.
Before Kael could answer, Tessa called.
“Kael, you’d better get over here.”
She spoke loudly enough that it felt deliberate, as if she wanted to
make sure I heard every word.
“I fell, and it’s because of what you did to me last night. If you don’t
come take care of me, I’m going to drag you on PackNet.”
This kind of thing happened all the time.
Even when I begged him through tears to stay, he would still go to
her–and then turn around and accuse me of being vicious, jealous,
and unreasonable.
This time, I gave Kael an understanding smile.
“Go.”
“I’ll take the Pack shuttle back myself.”
Kael froze. To my surprise, he pressed his lips together and said to
Tessa, “Can’t you handle it yourself? I need to take Grace home. It’s
her birthday.”
I was caught off guard too, but I quickly shut down the strange little
stir of emotion inside me.
I told myself not to read into it.
I had no idea what Tessa said next, but in the end, Kael still asked
me to get out of the car.
Looking guilty, he promised, “I’ll buy you the necklace.”
“I’m going to check on her first, but I’ll come back tonight and
spend your birthday with you.”
By that evening, Kael had disappeared on me just like always.
And the moon–diamond necklace was around Tessa’s neck.
I looked at the photo she had posted on Instagram with the necklace deliberately on display and felt nothing.
As long as Kael had personally promised something to me, Madison
could take it.
My wolf stirred lazily inside me.
“Grace, are you sure you want to leave?”
“Kael’s bond with you hasn’t gone cold yet. His love and
possessiveness still run deep.”
I looked at the necklace around Tessa’s neck and smiled.
“But if even a piece of it is meant for someone else, it’s tainted.”
“Madison, I don’t eat spoiled food.”
Kael’s bond with me had once been as powerful as a full moon.
But if Tessa could weaken it even a little, then one day she could
extinguish it completely.
Love was nowhere near as reliable as an Alpha vow.
At ten that night, Kael called and told me Tessa had thrown me a
birthday party.
When I arrived, everyone was playing Truth or Dare.
Tessa held a card high in the air, grinning like an obnoxious little brat.
“Whoever draws an ace gets a ten–second kiss from me.”
“Don’t be shy. Not everyone gets a kiss from this fake brother.”
Kael turned over his card.
It was an ace.
The entire room went silent.
Everyone instinctively looked at me.
I calmly sat down beside Kael and raised my phone.
“Go ahead.”
“I’ll record it for you. That way you’ll have something to look back on when you’re old.*
I didn’t make a scene. I didn’t flip a table. I didn’t insult anyone.
My expression was perfectly calm.
Kael’s expression, however, hardened.
The next second, Tessa looped her arms around his neck.
“Grace already said it’s fine. What, you scared?”
“Weren’t you the one who couldn’t let go of me last night? Why are
you playing the honorable Alpha now?”
Her taunt seemed to get under Kael’s skin.
He leaned in and kissed her.
The kiss quickly deepened, stretching well past ten seconds.
When everyone realized I wasn’t angry, they started cheering them on.
Someone even bumped my arm.
“Luna, now you’re finally getting it.”
“If you keep being this chill, we’ll start inviting you along when
Alpha and the rest of us go out.”
At last, Kael’s friends had accepted me.
Too bad it happened after I had already stopped loving him.
Kael seemed distracted throughout the kiss.
He kept looking at me.
I couldn’t figure out what he wanted, so I gave him a thumbs–up to show him he was doing a great job.
Instead, Kael’s face turned cold.
He shoved Tessa away, grabbed my hand, and dragged me into the hallway.
“Why aren’t you jealous?”
