After the Breakup, My basketball Player boyfriend Begged Me Not to Leave Chapter 06
“I thought you were going on that trip with your friends. Why
are you canceling it now?”
The sound of his familiar voice made my eyes sting.
“They don’t want me going with them anymore.”
Dad immediately caught the strain in my voice.
“What happened? Did you break up with that boyfriend of yours?”
“Where are you? I’ll come get you.”
I have a fever. I’m at the hospital getting IV fluids.”
His voice sharpened with concern.
“Someone’s there with you, right?”
“I’m on my way.”
Okay,” I said, then hung up.
Connor came back carrying breakfast.
I wiped at my tears, my voice hoarse.
I’m not hungry. I can’t eat.”
His mouth tightened.
“You still need to eat. What if your blood sugar drops and you pass out again?”
There had been another away game once when we’d ended up one breakfast short.
I didn’t want any of the players competing on an empty stomach, so I’d gone without.
At halftime, I collapsed while bringing them water.
Trevor was supposed to be subbed out anyway, so Connor told him to take me to the hospital.
Trevor refused because he didn’t want anyone wondering why
he was taking special care of me.
In the end, Connor took me instead.
Trevor came to the hospital after the game to apologize.
Seeing how pale I was, he’d been so upset for me that he cried.
All the angry things I’d wanted to say died in my throat,
though I still couldn’t stop myself from blaming him in the end.
Snapping back to the present, I took the bowl of oatmeal
from Connor with my left hand.
I hadn’t realized it was still scalding hot.
Connor saw me wince and immediately took the bowl back.
My palm burned, and even though I’d only held it for a few seconds, the skin was already red.
Connor asked a nurse for some burn gel and carefully applied it.
“My fault.”
“Once the oatmeal cools down, I’ll hold the bowl for you. You
can just use the spoon with your left hand.”
I nodded.
“Thanks.”
“Once my dad gets here, you won’t have to keep taking care of me.”
A familiar voice cut in from nearby.
What are you two doing here?”
I turned and saw Trevor walking past with Brianna, supporting her as she limped.
Connor answered calmly.
Sydney has a fever. I brought her in for IV fluids.”
That only made Trevor angrier.
His attention locked on me.
“I wasn’t asking you. I was asking Sydney.”
I looked up and saw that Brianna’s hand was clasped in his.
“Connor was just being nice enough to bring me to the hospital.”
“And who I spend time with is none of your business.”
I’d already sent Trevor the breakup message.
Even if he wanted to pretend he hadn’t seen it, that didn’t make us a couple anymore.
My answer clearly got under his skin, and he fired back with a
deliberate jab.
“You think I’m worried about you?”
“I’m worried about Connor wasting time here when the team
heeds him at practice.”
could only laugh at myself.
My gaze dropped to my red, swollen palm.
Connor cut him off.
Trevor, there’s something I’ve never understood.”
“Why are you always so hostile to Sydney?”
