The Nobody He Killed was Royalty Chapter 08
Freya’s POVÂ
The guards drag Adrian toward the door.Â
He fights against them, screaming. “Wait! Wait!”Â
He breaks free and drops to his knees, crawlingÂ
toward me and my father.Â
I hold the baby, ready to turn and leave.Â
“I was wrong.” His voice comes out hoarse. “ButÂ
please, I’m begging you, ask your father. Don’t cut ties with the serpent clan.”Â
“It’s all I have left. I can’t let my people suffer… Please, for old times‘ sake.”Â
Father stands beside me, his voice calm. “If you feelÂ
sorry for him, I’ll restore the ties.”Â
I look down at Adrian, watch hope flicker in his eyes,Â
“Do you remember when I was on my knees begging you?”Â
I say it quietly.Â
Adrian freezes.Â
“I begged you to take me to the infirmary. Begged you to believe me. Begged you to let me go for the baby’s sake.”Â
“What did you do?”Â
His mouth hangs open. Nothing comes out.Â
I laugh. “If you’d known who I really was, if you’d known my father could crush your clan without breaking a sweat, you would’ve treated me better.”Â
Tears stream down Adrian’s face. His whole body shakes.Â
“Too bad.” My voice turns colder. “I just wanted to see how low you’d go.”Â
“Now I know.”Â
This man. I thought he was my true love once.Â
Turns out all his tenderness came from thinking I didn’t deserve better.Â
Adrian crawls closer, grabs my ankle.Â
“Please… even if you won’t forgive me, at least… at least give us a chance to survive…” His voice breaks.” If you cut ties, the other clans will kill us… I’m begging you…”Â
I look down at him.Â
This man.Â
Once so high and mighty, now on the ground like a dog.Â
“Someone as worthless as you,” I say slowly, “whatÂ
makes you think you have any right to ask me for anything?”Â
Adrian’s whole body jolts.Â
“Didn’t you say it yourself? That without you, I was nothing.”Â
“Now you know which one of us actually can’t survive without the other.”Â
I don’t say anything else.Â
I turn with the baby in my arms, walk up the estate steps with my father.Â
Behind me, Adrian’s screams tear through the air.Â
The guards drag him out.Â
“I don’t look back.Â
After that day, I don’t hear about Adrian again until a month later.Â
The neighboring clans launch massive attacks on the serpent clan.Â
Without protection, the serpents can’t fight back.Â
Adrian leads his people into desperate battle.Â
But it’s all pointless.Â
Serpents die in droves.Â
In the end, he can only flee with what’s left of his people. No one knows where.Â
His mother dies in the fighting.Â
As for Seraphina, Adrian abandoned her long ago.Â
Word is she became some clan’s prisoner.Â
Serpents have unique physiology. Incredibly fertile.Â
She’ll probably spend the rest of her life as a breeding tool. Less than human.Â
Is this the status and special treatment she wanted?Â
The irony.Â
Later I hear the serpents who escaped plot together in secret. They assassinate Adrian.Â
They take his corpse to the other clans as an offering.Â
They trade their former leader for the chance to go home. To carve out some small existence.Â
They say before Adrian died, he kept muttering something.Â
“My fault… I killed her… come back…”Â
When I hear all this, I’m playing with the baby in his cradle.Â
He looks up at me with wide eyes, tiny hand wrapped around my finger.Â
Thinking about all of them and how they ended up, I just smile.Â
“It’s all over.” I say softly. “Everyone who hurt us paid the price.”Â
The baby coos, like he’s answering me.Â
I look down at him.Â
This little life.Â
Almost lost.Â
But now he’s safe, lying here.Â
The two of us. We have a bright future ahead of us.Â
