He Defended Her, He Said I Deserved It Chapter 03

He Defended Her, He Said I Deserved It Chapter 03

At two in the morning, the pain still had not stopped.

I pushed myself up from the bed.

After two steps, my legs gave out.

Ethan had not come home.

called him twice.

But there was no response.

So I called a car and forced myself through the emergency room alone.

A nurse saw me and hurried over.

You’re so pale. Where does it hurt?”

“My lower abdomen.”

Then she saw the blood on my clothes.

She immediately called for another nurse.

In the exam room, the ultrasound probe pressed against my abdomen.

I flinched.

The doctor stopped immediately.

“Don’t move.”

A few moments later, she looked at me.

“Did you know you were pregnant?”

I stared at her.

“No.”

She sighed.

“You’ve had abdominal pain for a week.”

“Didn’t you think of coming to get it checked out?”

The baby has long since lost its heartbeat..”

There is also blood in the uterus.”

“We need to perform a D&C right away.”

I closed my eyes.

Tears slid down my face.

I had miscarried.

I had thought the pain was normal.

thought this was a lingering effect from that night.

I had thought I only needed to endure it.

No one had told me what I was supposed to do after

something like that.

I was afraid to tell my mother.

And Ethan had been completely focused on Chloe.

While I was struggling through the pain, another life had

quietly disappeared.

When I finally broke down, the nurse handed me the surgical

consent form.

“We need a family member to sign.”

I looked at the signature line.

“I have no family.”

“What about your husband?”

I swallowed.

“He’s dead.”

The nurse froze.

I took the pen from her and signed my own name.

Avery Bennett.

My hand shook as I finished.

After surgery, I was moved to recovery.

The woman in the next bed had just finished her examination.

Her husband pulled the blanket over her.

“The doctor said you’re okay.”

“Don’t be scared.”

“I’ll take time off work.”

“I won’t let you come to the hospital alone again.”

She complained that he had arrived too late.

He apologized again and again.

Then he asked what she wanted to eat.

I turned away.

A moment later, I picked up my phone.

Ethan still had not returned my calls.

There was only one message from him.

We have court coming up. We shouldn’t see each other right now.”

I’ll stay at the firm for a few days.”

His social media was far more active.

He had posted Chloe’s nomination for a legal award,

The comments were full of congratulations.

Chloe replied:

‘Thank you, Ethan.”

“I wouldn’t have made it here without you.”

He praised her humility.

They went back and forth in the comments.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I blocked him.

Just before dawn, my IV was finally finished.

I went home.

sat down and read every medical record, test result, and

surgical report again.

The date of the pregnancy loss was the same day Chloe had called me.

I touched the ultrasound image.

My eyes burned.

After a long silence, I put the medical records, test results,

and surgical report together.

I would send them with the divorce papers.

Ethan and I had spent years trying to have a child.

We had been married for six years.

This little life had come without either of us knowing.

And it had disappeared just as quietly.

I cannot be the only one to bear this grief.
