I Was The New Boss, She Told Me To Take The Freight Elevator Chapter 07
Briar swallowed hard. He stared at me for a long time.
“Janessa, you’re divorcing me just because I gave Lia a watch? We’ve been married for ten years!”
His voice grew urgent. “I was only lying because I was
afraid you’d overthink things like you did now. I just wanted to buy something to encourage an employee!”
“Encourage?” I looked up at him, feeling nothing but calm. “Briar, save that line for yourself. Don’t take me
for a fool.”
I paused. “Oh, and HR will send out your termination
notice this afternoon. Finish today and you’re done.”
He hadn’t expected me to actually fire him. His face
burned with humiliation and anger.
“Janessa, I was unanimously chosen as general manager by the board of directors!”
“I’ve worked at headquarters longer than you have!”
“You really think you can just snap your fingers and
I’m out?”
I couldn’t help laughing.
He froze. “What are you laughing at?”
I didn’t answer. Instead, I lowered my head, swiped my
phone to a certain page, and handed it to him.
“Briar, the reason you became general manager six
years ago was because the board wanted to keep me.”
“Back then, they wanted me to finish handling the overseas project and return to headquarters as
president.”
“In other words, they appointed you because they were
afraid I would leave.”
“I agreed because I believed you had the ability.”
“But now it seems I was wrong.”
On the screen were my private messages with the chairman.
[Janessa, I knew you would eventually return to serve
as president because of your husband. Six years ago, I promised you that as long as you were willing to take the position, I would let your husband continue as general manager at headquarters.]
[Your abilities are exceptional. I believe that under
your leadership, the group will reach a higher level.]
Briar stared at it in silence, then took a breath and
pushed the phone back. “You’re lying! I earned my
place–on my own. Not because of you.”
I nodded. “I don’t deny that you have ability.
Otherwise, how would I be any different from you
using your personal feelings to promote Lia?”
“But Briar, I’m more capable than you. Do you understand?”
After saying that, I lowered my eyes and reopened the documents. “If there’s nothing else, leave. I still have
work to do. I’ll send you the divorce agreement later.”
Silence lasted for several seconds.
I thought he would leave.
Instead, he stumbled back a few steps, stopped, and
just stood there, jaw set, staring at me with that
stubborn look.
“Janessa! The doctor said last time that you probably
can’t have children anymore!”
“You’re already in your forties, and you can’t give me a
child. After divorcing me, who would even want you?”
The more he spoke, the more emotional he became.
His entire face turned an ugly shade of red.
“Lia is just a cleaner. How can she compare to you? She
can’t possibly threaten your position. So why are you so hell–bent on making this a thing?”
He said it like it was unassailable logic.
I laughed in disbelief. “Briar, no matter how old I am,
I’m not the one who did wrong here. My life isn’t just about marriage.”
“If you don’t leave now, I’ll call security.”
At that moment, the office door was pushed open from the outside.
It was Lia.
She placed one hand on my desk and held up her phone with the other. The phone screen showed that she was
livestreaming.
“Janessa! You’re illegally firing me!”
“I’ve worked here for ten years, and you’re firing me
just because you think I’m too close to your husband!”
“Let the whole internet see who’s really in the wrong here!”
My expression darkened.
I glanced at her screen–over twenty thousand viewers.
