Briar’s meeting had ended.
Through the crowd, I saw him walk out with a worried expression.
The moment he saw Lia, he rushed over to her. “What happened, Lia?”
“I could hear you getting upset from inside. Who dared
to upset you with me around?”
Lia’s face crumpled into a pout. She patted his chest coyly. “Mr. Hewitt! It’s just a new intern! She not only broke the rules, but she even threatened to sue me!”
Hearing that, Briar immediately turned around. “That’s outrageous! Who dares treat you like this in
my company…”
The next second, he saw my face. His entire body froze.
I let out a cold laugh at his guilty look. “Briar, what do you think–do I dare?”
The moment he saw me, he immediately stepped away
from Lia. He forced himself to stay calm.
“Wasn’t I the one who told you not to make a big deal
out of the elevator situation?”
“Why did you take it as far as threatening legal action?”
Everyone immediately turned their eyes toward me.
“What does that mean? This woman actually knows
Mr. Hewitt?”
“But so what if she knows him? Didn’t you hear? Mr. Hewitt is still taking Ms. Sandoval’s side.”
Hearing those comments, Lia’s eyes instantly turned red.
She grabbed Briar’s sleeve. Her voice was full of grievance.
“Mr. Hewitt, you said that in this company, everyone
has to strictly follow the rules I set!”
“Even if she knows you, she’s no exception!”
“Besides, I was only worried because some unknown
outsider suddenly used your private elevator. What if she had some contagious disease?”
After hearing that, Briar’s expression softened immediately. He turned to me.
“Janessa, she’s just a young girl who takes rules seriously.”
“I’ll have her apologize to you. Can we just let this go?”
“Apologize?” Lia’s expression instantly darkened. She
shook off his hand. “Mr. Hewitt! Didn’t you come here to support me?”
“Why are you asking me to apologize to her?”
“I was only protecting your private elevator. What did I do wrong?”
I looked at Briar with a faint smile. “Private elevator?
Briar, this isn’t the place for special treatment. And I
don’t accept her apology.”
“What?” Lia’s eyes widened in anger. “Who said I was going to apologize?”
“You’re not even a full employee. Since when do you get a say in how this company runs?”
Briar must have seen I was genuinely angry. He stepped in front of me and snapped at Lia, “Enough.
Shut up.”
Then he turned around and pulled me aside. In a lowered voice, he said, “Janessa, she’s still young. You don’t need to make such a big issue out of her not letting you use the executive elevator.”
“If you treat a young girl this aggressively, how will anyone respect you in the future?”
I frowned and yanked my arm free. “Briar, she’s running a caste system in this company. And I’m the one making a big deal out of it?”
Briar said hurriedly. “I didn’t mean that…”
I glanced at the watch on Lia’s wrist and let out a cold laugh. “And you’re protecting your female subordinate this much? Anyone who didn’t know better might think
she was your wife.”
Briar’s face went pale with panic.
Before he could explain, Lia suddenly laughed. “Oh,
you caught me?”
What?
I turned around and met her smug, satisfied smile.
“I really have been with Mr. Hewitt for a long time. So what?”
“Now that you know, apologize and get lost.”
The surrounding employees started whispering even louder.
“Oh my God! Ms. Sandoval really is Mr. Hewitt’s girlfriend! No wonder he spoils her so much!”
“Actually, I noticed it a long time ago. Several nights when I worked late, I saw them being intimate in the
office.”
“This is hilarious. This woman thought reporting to Mr. Hewitt would change anything, but she offended Mr. Hewitt’s girlfriend instead.”
Briar’s face turned pale instantly. “Lia! This is the
office. Don’t talk nonsense.”
Of course he was panicking.
If he had only allowed his female subordinate to abuse her authority, I could have handled it as a workplace issue.
But betraying me was a completely different matter.
I’d only suspected it before, but now it was clear.
Yet Lia didn’t notice his expression at all. She raised her wrist and cooed, “What nonsense? I’m not lying!”
“This is the birthday gift you gave me just a few days ago!”
“Since she already knows, why keep hiding it?”
Briar panicked. He grabbed her arm and tried to pull her away.
“Have you lost your mind? Shut up!”
“Take the day off today. Come back after you’ve calmed down.”
“Mr. Hewitt!” But Lia refused to stop. She struggled
while shouting, “Why are you afraid of her?”
“You’re the general manager. Who here would dare say anything against you?”
Hearing that, I laughed.
I turned to Kori and calmly said, “Kori, fire Briar.”
“Once he’s no longer the general manager, let’s see
whose coattails Ms. Sandoval rides after this.”
