He Welcomed Her Pup While Mine Was Cremated Chapter 03
POV: Maris Alden
A moment later, Brennan let out a mocking laugh.
“So you know Keira’s pregnant.”
“Use another lie next time. This one is disgusting.”
With that, he stood and headed for the door.
“You’re the one who said no. Don’t go crying to my parents that I’m
ignoring you. That will only make me find you more disgusting.”
After Brennan left, silence returned to the room.
I scrubbed my lips hard, trying to erase his scent from my skin.
That blend of cedar and midnight leather used to drive me crazy-
in the best way. Now it only disgusted me.
Brennan and I were once in love.
On my eighteenth birthday, Brennan stood under the full moon in
a black suit, smiling at me. “Maris, can I be with you?”
I looked into his determined eyes and nodded.
From that day on, Brennan treated me like I was his whole world,
desperate to give me everything good.
Until the day Garrick called us into the study.
“Maris, Brennan, you’re twenty–two now. It’s time to marry.*
“What day do you want to hold the mate ceremony?”
After that, Brennan’s attitude toward me suddenly changed. The
love in his eyes was replaced by irritation and disgust.
I didn’t know what I’d done wrong, and Brennan never explained.
After the wedding, I got pregnant quickly.
He started staying out every night, even bringing Keira to
important events without caring what people thought of me.
I cried and threw fits.
But Brennan just looked at me coldly, a scornful smile on his lips.
“I gave you what you wanted–the future Luna title and a pup. What
more do you have to throw a tantrum about?”
“Maris, you know what? Your tears just disgust me.”
From that day on, I stopped caring about how he fooled around
with another woman and focused on raising Elara.
I thought that with her by my side, my life would always have hope.
But now, I’d lost even her.
Early the next morning, Garrick, Beatrice, and I arrived at Moonhall
Funeral Home.
When Elara was wheeled into the cremation chamber, my tears fell
hard, but I bit my lip and made no sound.
Beatrice looked at me with concern. “Maris, if it hurts, let it out. It’s okay.“.
I shook my head and said nothing.
Garrick’s jaw was clenched, his face livid. “Where’s Brennan? On a
day like this, how can he not show up as a father?”
A flash of anger crossed Beatrice’s eyes too.
Garrick’s Beta shot me a guilty look and said quietly, “Brennan’s phone is off.”
When the Moonhall attendant came out holding the moonstone
urn, Garrick reached for it with trembling hands.
I snatched it into my arms before he could. “Give her to me. She’s my pup.”
I said in a hollow voice. “Dad, you gave me a home when I had none.
I’m so grateful, but Elara is my pup. I’m begging you…”
I choked back a sob and whispered, “Elara is my pup. She will not
rest in the Holt moon crypt. She will not carry Holt blood in death.”
Garrick’s brow furrowed. Beatrice steadied him and looked at me, her eyes full of pain.
“Alright, Maris. You’re Elara’s mother. You decide.”
I shot her a grateful look, held the urn, and headed straight home.
I was taking Elara’s things with me too. I didn’t want any trace of
her left in that cold wolf fortress.
But the two wolf warriors at the door gave me hesitant looks. After
a few seconds, they pushed open the red doors.
Brennan’s cedar and midnight leather scent, mixed with a sickly
sweet gardenia and orange blossom, hit my nose.
The wet, filthy sounds came from the bedroom at the far end.
“Careful, Brennan. I’m carrying your pup.”
