Moon Wish-Doll Chapter 06
Nora spun around in alarm.
She automatically pressed a hand to her chest,
putting on a pained grimace for show.
“Dad, you came in out of nowhere… you startled me.
What are you doing? W–where’s my mother’s heirloom? No one’s found it yet…”
But this time, the tears didn’t stir any pity.
“You’re still not well?” Dad’s voice gave nothing away.
Nora nodded automatically. “That fever really took it out of me. I’ll probably need some time to recover.
Before she could finish her sentence, he seized a fistful of her hair and wrenched her hard enough to yank her right off the chair.
His free hand dialed the Healers‘ Wing. He booked a full workup.
“Since you’re not better, let’s find out exactly what’s wrong.”
Nora screamed, clawing at his grip. “Dad! Are you out of your mind? Let go of me! Are you deaf? Let go of my hair!”
She dropped her soft, frail act entirely–the agony stripped away every last trace of her fake gentle mask.
Derek heard the commotion and came running with my doll in his arms.
He stopped short at the sight of Nora’s twisted face. “Nora? I thought you were supposed to be the gentle, fragile one. Since when do you snap and shout like that?”
He looked at Dad, not understanding, but got in the car anyway.
At the Healers‘ Wing, Nora had vials of blood drawn.
George, Nora’s personal pack healer, hurried over- he’d obviously gotten wind of what was happening ahead of time.
He launched into a lecture. “Alpha Theodore, Miss Nora’s constitution is delicate. Drawing all this blood like this—are you trying to kill her?”
Dad’s eyes were ice.
Dad shot a single sharp glance at the Pack guards, and they instantly moved to seize George into custody.
Results came back fast. White blood cell counts normal. Everything normal.
Her vitals were even stronger than most healthy young she wolves her age–nothing like someone recovering from a severe fever.
Dad shoved the report in George’s face. “Explain this, Healer George. You said she was sick. Since when are patients this healthy? Have you got any explanation for this?”
“Falsifying Pack medical reports means Council prison.
George was drenched in sweat. “I–I beg your mercy, Alpha. I only falsified records because she bribed me!”
Nora glared at him. “Shut up. Don’t you dare. You took my money.”
But keeping his mouth shut wasn’t going to help him now.
George’s voice shook. “She said living with an idiot made her sick. She said when Claire came down with that fever, she should’ve just let her burn up and die.”
My sickness had been severe back then. But it wasn’t enough to destroy my mind. That happened because
the fever wouldn’t break. Eventually, it caused brain damage.
Even after the fever dropped, I’d lost the ability to think normally. My thoughts turned slow, foggy, and delayed.
“Because I swapped out all of Claire’s fever–reducing medicine!” George closed his eyes. “Those were cherry syrups. She did it.
Derek stared at Nora like he’d never seen her.
He pieced the timeline together. Back then, after the woman who’d saved Dad died, Nora had already been taken in by the Caldwell Pack.
“So Claire becoming like this–that’s on you too.”
Nora looked away and stayed silent.
Dad gave a cold laugh. “Suit yourself. If you refuse to speak, I’ll bring in someone who’s willing to spill everything.
The door opened again.
A woman with nearly identical sharp facial features to Nora was marched forcibly into the room by guards.
Derek’s jaw dropped. “Mrs. Robinson? You’re not dead? What the hell is going on?”
