My Husband Sent His Twin to My Bed, and I Made Him King Chapter 05
I woke up in the Vincent family’s penthouse.
Asher moved even faster than I’d expected. In just forty–eight hours, using Arthur’s identity and the old Sterling don’s authorization, he took control of every asset under Arthur’s
name. The laundering accounts funneled through Jersey shell companies, the elite Swiss bank black cards–all of it ended up in
Asher’s hands.
Most importantly, he completely froze the offshore slush fund
Arthur had secretly set up for Chloe in the Cayman Islands.
That so–called dream girl, who was used to burning through Arthur’s money and living in a fifty–thousand–dollar–a–night presidential suite, fell from heaven into the mud overnight.
Every one of her cards was declined, and the hotel manager had her tossed out without a shred of mercy.
“She’s back in New York.” Asher wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, a note of mockery in his voice. “Thirty minutes ago, she was making a scene in the lobby of a Sterling- owned casino, screaming that she wanted to see Boss Arthur. Security almost dislocated her jaw.”
“Don’t get blood on the casino carpet.” I reached up and straightened his tie. “Send her to the man she loves most. I’m sure Arthur could use a little love right now.”
The water cell beneath headquarters.
I sat in the surveillance room, quietly enjoying the show.
On the monitor, Arthur hung upside down in filthy water, suspended by iron chains.
The once–arrogant mafia prince was covered in lash marks left by the enforcers, and the agony from his shattered legs had
turned his face paper white.
When the steel door to the cell was shoved open, Arthur struggled to lift his head.
Chloe was thrown inside like a bag of trash.
She was soaked through, and her carefully done makeup had
long since melted into a mess.
“Chloe…” Wild joy and desperate hope exploded in Arthur’s bloodshot eyes. “I knew it… I knew you wouldn’t abandon me.
You went to beg the old man to spare me, didn’t you? Hurry—
get these chains off me!”
But Chloe froze for a few seconds. Then, when she finally got a
clear look at the foul–smelling man in front of her, she suddenly let out a scream.
“You’re pathetic! Didn’t you promise me you were going to be the head of the Sterling family? Didn’t you say you’d make that bitch Audrey kneel in front of me? And now what? My cards are shut off! I got thrown out of the hotel! And you’re nothing but a
pile of stinking garbage!”
Arthur went completely still.
The guard in charge of the water cell came in chewing tobacco. ”
What’s all the noise? Rules are rules. Nobody walks out of this
dungeon alive.”
Chloe started shaking all over.
Then she whirled around and, without a second’s hesitation, threw herself into the guard’s arms.
She yanked open her blouse and pressed her full chest against his arm.
“Take me with you! Please–if you give me just enough money to survive in this city, I’ll do anything! I’m way more useful than
that loser!”
Outside the screen, I swirled my red wine with a cold laugh.
“Chloe–I’ll kill you! I’ll kill every last one of you!”
Arthur snapped. He suddenly lowered his head and bit down on a rusty nail wedged in a crack in the wall. Ignoring the pain as it
tore his lips open, he fought to yank it free.
At the exact moment the guard let his guard down–already loosening his belt because of Chloe’s offering—Arthur twisted
his wrecked body forward, sank his teeth into the man’s neck,
and then drove the rusty nail from his mouth straight into his carotid artery.
Blood burst out, staining the filthy water red.
Chloe let out a shrill scream and collapsed into the bloody water.
Arthur panted, drenched in blood.
He ignored Chloe completely, fumbled a gun and a ring of keys
from the dead guard’s belt, and dragged himself out of the dungeon one agonizing step at a time on his ruined legs.
“Asher… Audrey… I’ll use your blood to honor everything you took from me…”
I switched off the monitor and drained the red wine from my glass in one swallow.
At last, the fish had bitten through the hook.
