He Defended Her, He Said I Deserved It Chapter 07

Ethan shoved her away.

His back slammed hard against the wall.

“I never loved you.”

“I only saw you as my protégé.”

“Don’t twist that into something else.”

Chloe laughed.

It was sharp.

“Really?”

“Who made sure I had everything I needed when I wasn’t

feeling well?”

“Who stayed up all night helping me fix my work?”

“Who canceled dinner with his wife to have dinner with me?”

Who stood in court and tore apart his own wife’s testimony for me?”

And now you want to pretend you’re some perfect husband?”

Every word hit him.

He wanted to explain.

He wanted to say it had only been professional concern.

But even he could not make that sound convincing anymore.

After a long silence, he called the police.

Chloe panicked.

She tried to grab the phone again.

Ethan restrained her.

The police arrived soon after.

Before they took her away, she looked back at him.

“You think Avery will forgive you now?”

“You’re the one who hurt her the most.”

Don’t forget that.”

The police car disappeared into the night.

Ethan stood still.

Then something clicked.

He rushed back to his office.

He tore open the rest of Avery’s envelope.

There was the divorce petition.

Then the medical records.

The lab results.

The surgical report.

The gestational age was clearly listed.

Twelve weeks.

Ethan stared at the words.

His breathing stopped.

He remembered that night.

Avery had locked herself in the bedroom.

He had never checked on her.

He had assumed she was throwing another tantrum.

He had taken Chloe out for sushi instead.

While Avery had gone to the hospital alone.

She had signed the forms alone.

She had lost their child alone.

Then he remembered her accusation.

And his own words.

It was your fault for rushing out without wearing. underwear.”

Ethan bent over as if someone had stabbed him.

He had not only defended the real criminal.

He had blamed his own wife when she was at her lowest.

He had never even known he had become a father.

“Avery…”

He dropped to his knees.

Then he slapped himself across the face.

He called her.

Only an automated message answered.

Her number was blocked.

Her emails were rejected.

Every way of reaching her had been cut off.

Ethan held the crumpled medical report.

He finally broke down.

Chloe had been right about one thing.

The person who had destroyed Avery was not only the man

who attacked her.

It was Ethan.

The man who should have believed her.

The man who should have protected her.

He had been the one to push her deeper into the dark.

After a long time, Ethan stood.

He carefully gathered every medical document.

No matter what it cost him, he had to find her.
